Your Very First Monster Encounter

My first monster encounter as a player was with a small pack of giant rats (maybe 3-4 total) in a homemade adventure my cousin designed. I was a druid, and I figured the natural reaction would be to flee like crazy. (The other players weren't all that thrilled with my brilliant tactic.) I was in junior high school at the time.

Years later, when I first started my kids on AD&D, I ran them up against a powered-down (damaged from a battle with the inhabitants of a monastery) yeti as their first encounter. (It was a modified adventure from an early issue of Dungeon, originally intended as a solo mission, I think.)

My very first gaming group, on our first adventure, was travelling on foot across country to our very first job. And we were attacked by skeletons. We all learned right off the bat that arrows and swords don't work so well against skeletons. And our cleric learned the importance of trying to Turn Undead.
