Zelda voted best game ever

What I found odd is that it was Link to the Past that was voted #1. I would have assumed it would have been Ocarina of Time (seemingly unable to be toppled at gamerankings.com), which brought more to the table in terms of innovation and direction to adventure games, IMO, much like what Mario 64 did for the platforming genre.

Regardless, I have no doubt the series will always be near the top of most 'top X games' lists for years to come. Every iteration receives critical acclaim and consistently raises the bar for its peers.

Doom... now there is a game which had not only one but three major tech, gameplay or genre related innovations.
1) textures on floors and ceilings in a first person environment
2) z axis added creating a "fake" 3d environment

Ultima Underworld had both of these a year before Doom was released. Not to mention it also had deeper gameplay.

Quite right. UU (from the folks who would bring us one of the most distrubing game series EVAH, System Shock). Doom's claim to fame was not the 3D nearly as much as the excellent level design, insane gameplay (more enemies on screen than ever before), outstanding use of sound, SHAREWARE RELEASAL and deathmatch gameplay (which really didn't take off until Doom II). It was the Shareware aspect that made Doom the success it became.

Zelda rightfully deserves it's place on that list. Link to the past is, in many ways, a better game than Ocarina of Time. OoT is very pretty, but was the first generation of a new technology, and it showed.

Wizardry should be on such a list, as Henry says. It was a landmark, and nothing less, that gave rise to tons of imitators. Ulitma IV was an amazing game, in some ways, but, to me, astoundingly boring in others. It's reach exceeded it's grasp, but what a reach it had.

I suspect you'll find that this list is going to be skewed towards console gaming first, and more recent titles second. I don't expect to see, say, Karateka on there.

Doesn't the article imply that the entire Zelda series was voted #1?

I was under the same impression originally, but the news bit on Planet Gamecube linking to the article seemed to imply they were specifically referring to Link to the Past.
