Zone on fire kills minions?

Hi all,
I'm trying to verify something that happened in last night's game... my Wizard launched orbmaster's incendiary detonation (AP) out in front of our frontline, and then expanded the duration and burst area to include more enemies and some of the good guys (not effected by spell). Two bad guys left the area (should take 2 fire damage at start of their turn)... and i was curious... so I quoted...

A minion is destroyed when it takes any amount of damage. Damage from an attack or from a source that doesn’t require an attack roll (such as the paladin’s
divine challenge or the fighter’s cleave) also destroys a minion. However, if a minion is missed by an attack that normally deals damage on a miss, it takes no damage.

... to the DM, and he removed the two minis (ie. they died)... so, are we correct in sayng that a minion who takes 2 fire damage at the start of it's turn would be killed?

thank you,

Mike

Yes. Damage from a source that doesn't require a separate attack roll (like Cleave or this auto fire damage) kills minions. They just don't take damage from something that deals damage on a miss.

And this assumes that you're fighting level-appropriate minions. In my game I wouldn't let environmental hazards, for instance, kill a high-level minion.

Yep.

Note: this is NOT "an attack that normally deals damage on a miss". So the minions take damage...and they die, since they have only 1 hp.:]

So long as the giant minions are forced to move (or tricked in some way) through areas of campfires or caltrops.

BTW, have caltrops been stated out for 4e? And campfires?

I've really started to like zones/auras/adjacent to powers that damage on 'ending turn' in it rather than starting in it, for a lot of reasons.

But yeah, totally kills the minions.

These are the only caltrops I have seen:

C C Caltrops (minor; encounter) ✦ Trap
As a minor action, a kobold spiker can drop caltrops in an adjacent square. Any size Medium or larger creature that enters a square with caltrops suffers a +10 attack against Reflex that does 2d4 + 4 damage and slows the target (save ends). Once the caltrops hit with an attack, they are crushed and destroyed. A spiker carries enough caltrops to fill 1 square.

Dragon #364 p. 52, Creature Incarnations.

Sorry to jack the thread but does the same idea apply to falling damage? I assumed it did for an earlier session

As long as they don't 'miss' the ground :p

Oh and huge giant minions only die from falling in a camp fire or stepping on a caltrop if caused to do so by the PCs, otherwise it is DMs discretion. In game stats only apply to when they are engaged with the PCs :)
