The problems I have with edition wars lie in the stubborn absolute pigheadedness of many people that participate in them, the constant sniping and the personal attacking.

Otherwise, a nice, civil discussion about why one likes or dislikes a certain edition is cool.

Depends on the quality of individual posts in said "war".

There's not much point in shouting at people to change their opinions, but a whole lot of insight can be gleaned from the sharing of those opinions (even in somewhat heated voices).

I like reading threads about edition wars up to a point, but i rarely (if ever) get caught up in a spewing rant of vitriol. Like some others have said, it's good to show how disparate gamers who generally like the same kind of game can still be so venhemently separated by minor changes. Or major changes, as the case may be. Also, i've seen people eloquently spell out EXACTLY what i didn't like about a game system or rule when i couldn't find the words myself. It's like i knew there was some fundamental problem lurking in there, but couldn't put my finger on it.

Edition comparison threads - good.

Edition lauding threads - great

Edition problem threads - fine

Edition war threads where peoples sensibilities take a back seat and Mr Id grabs hold of the steering wheel and attempts to ram off the road all who disagree with him? Not fine.

This about sums it up for me. Discussion is good and healthy. Argument is not healthy, and generally counterproductive for all concerned. I will be very happy when people can talk about the editions without having to call each other idiots or otherwise treat each other badly in the process.

I like when people get angry and argue for what my position is. It saves me the trouble of doing so (which I'm too lazy to do anyway) and helps me feel justified in my own stance.

That being said, I don't really read the threads beyond a superficial skim these days.

I like them when people are allowed to come forward and say why they do or do not like a given edition. I don't like it when people post to a thread thinking they can be insulting and domineering, and tell others they don't know how to play, etc...

I do also dislike people who come here and knock a game they haven't tried playing. I don't care how experienced a gamer you are, reading does not tell you how that games mechanics work together, only playing can.

So that is why I gave 4E two months of play time (over 40 hours). I see how the mechanics work, and have a much better idea of how the classes build. I've been gaming for just about 25 years now, and I didn't "see" all of that just from my reading of it. I had a good sense of it, but that still isn't full understanding.

So I guess add to my list that people should actually spend about 20 plus hours playing and shaking down a new system before talking like they know what they need to know about a game. Bottom line is, unless you have played it, you don't know.

Otherwise, just say, "I read through it, but didn't feel inspired to learn anything more about it." Please don't go on posting like you know how the game will actually play. You don't.

Wow. This thread was actually useful. I learned something. I honestly never considered that edition war discussions could have any value but now I actually can see where they might.

Damn, and I was so hoping for a flame-war in this thread :D

In the general sense, I respectfully disagree. Argument can lead to positive outcomes, from time to time.

(And no, I'm not trying to start one with you here. :) )

Anyway, back to the thread!
