Is the current Doctor REALLY the 11th?

Are you kidding me? McGann is one of my favorites! He was good in a crap movie but the Big Finish productions showcase a whole lot of his incarnation and they're still making them.

I've only seen his work in the TV movie. I'm sure he could have made a fine Doctor, but the horridness of the TV movie overshadowed him. I think if it was written and produced better then I could have come to like him as the Doctor as well.

Heck, I even used to despise Peter Davison and refused to watch his episodes until really recently. I'm quickly warming up to Davison while at the same time one of my favorite companions, Peri, seems really annoying now. My tastes have definitely changed.

They already may have - in the Sarah Jane Adventures, in an episode titled "Death of the Doctor", which guest stars Matt Smith. When asked how many times he can regenerate, the Doctor replies "507". Russel Davies has said that this number was not to be taken seriously, as the limit of 13 lives was too entrenched to be dismissed by a throwaway line. But, well, the implication is still made.

It is simple to no-prize this, as a change that was made in the Time War, related to the Time Lock.

there was a SJA with matt smith? That must not have been shown on BBC America...

I don't really get that intense hate for the TV movie. Sure, it's not very good (though there are beats I like), but Doctor Who has done a lot worse. One just has to roll with the crappier eras.

(YMMV etc.)

The reason the movie is canon is because it was a joint production with the BBC, with the aim to get the Doctor Who series going again.. albeit a bizarre American version. When the movie failed, the BBC withdrew back to the UK.

So the BBC decides what is canon and what is not. I didn't mind Paul McGann. I disliked Eric Roberts. Hes basically the reason I wont watch the movie again. Id still watch the movie before Twin Dilemma.

That and the movie theme music annoys me no end..

I don't mind a bad episode here or there. Even the new series has had a few. The movie gets so much heat from me because it was the opportunity to restart Dr. Who and they tried to do this by Americanizing it. And that decision made it lose all the appeal the show had for me. I think the new series has proven the point that Americans will watch a good show whether it is Americanized or not. I thought at the time that the TV movie was Dr. Who's death knell and I was (pleasantly) surprised when the new series started.

The question now is : Can the Doctor be granted more regenerations now that there is no Time Lord to grant them? (ie Council etc). The Master has a new set of which he has used one up.

Wasn't the entire Matrix downloaded into the Doctors head?
If thats the case then the Doctor has all the knowledge (and minds) of all the timelords and so can give permission to himself.
