Is anybody else seeing C&C here?

I was reading over the Skill and Ability Score Seminar and most of the mechanical aspects of reworked skills and abilities screamed Castles & Crusades to me.

To those not familiar with the retro-clone, all saves are based on abilities, that are either Primed (things that you are good at) or not. This changes the DC of a given roll. If something is a class feature (say, sneaking for a thief), you get a bonus to it equal to your level.

It doesn't seem like it's exactly the same, of course (DCs probably won't be tied to a character, skills probably won't be locked into classes quite as much), but it still seems to me that someone read C&C and went "Well, that's a jolly good idea."

I'm pleased with this, personally. I think C&C has a lot of good things going for it, and the skill/attribute system is one of them, in my humble opinion.

I've been seeing C&C echoes in it for a few weeks, actually, once the announcement was made and it became more obvious that last year's L&L columns were brainstorming for it. The possibility of a C&C-style baseline with more options and access to all of WotC's IP and resources sounds very good to me, especially if it takes a few steps closer to 2E and/or 4E than C&C (which I like a lot about, but hews a bit too closely to Gygaxian 1E for my tastes).

There was some leak from one of playtesters suggesting that (yesterday).

It makes sense, the core of the game must be very very light.

I don't play C&C, but there are some similarities to what I've read about it.

They did say they were looking at all editions of D&D; hopefully they're looking at its spinoffs as well.

Mearls spent time talking to the OSRIC guy according to the rumormill, and Monte did work on Pathfinder... :uhoh:
