Witching Troll. Damn. I knew I forgot to mention something. The current characters are all working for the Witching Troll.

I only have a few minutes. So in short, um, yes, maybe.

I think it is doable. Anything is doable. Well, the young Tristan maybe not. But I need some time to think and get back to you. And I probably won't have that for a few days. There may be a little horse trading.

GE, Isida, feel free to jump in with any thoughts or suggestions.

No problem. I'm not married to the concept and if it winds up not being a match I'll come up with an alternative.

Don't know what you mean by this, though. I've got no desire to play a young Tristan. :p

I like the paladin concept. Will make Trickle a bit more of a challenge but the interaction between the two could be fun. I see you didn't mention Tristan's quest which is tied to his boons. I think that would be key for his current motivation and would probably affect how he gets integrated into the group. It's a pretty big element that our current crop of characters are bound to the Witching Troll, a mysterious being of some power, who has promised a boon for service of a year and a day although I guess that doesn't have to be the case for Tristan or your 2nd. I don't know what this Glowering Night thing is that our characters just heard about but if there were a reason Tristan was headed for the same village or already at the village we are headed to. Anyway, I'm tired and starting to ramble so I'll leave it at that.

I left the quest vague so that the DM could potentially do something with it, since he knows where things are going. I left the bonds open as well, you guys know best what way your characters might connect with him. I don't have a problem playing a character bound to the Witching Troll but I'd rather not do that with Tristan (though for sure my other character would tie into that). If service to the WT is a hard requirement I could come up with something else for my first character. :)

Sorry for the hassle, I wasn't looking to buck the established standard with a snowflake character or anything.

I have done a quick edit on the IC thread (post #83) to open the possibility of inserting TFP's character, removing the section taking the party to the edge of the village and within sight of the village. So the party is now back deep in the forest, some way from the village. With the exception of the quotes, it shouldn't create any discontinuity.

Ill tidy things up soon, but once again right now I have to run.

TFP - no hassle. Once I get some time, I am sure we can make this happen. I think we can use your suggestion, just need to hash out the details.

GlassEye, I hope you don't mind me nabbing your infobox! I just love the look of it. If you'd rather I come up with a sheet style of my own I can (though I'm sure it wouldn't look nearly as good!).

Lay on Hands When you touch someone, skin to skin, and pray for their well-being, roll+CHA. On a 10+ you heal 1d8 damage or remove one disease. On a 7–9, they are healed, but the damage or disease is transferred to you.

I wasn't sure if I was free to come up with a deity and religious system of my own or if that was something the DM wanted to do. I've put down that his mark of faith is of a goddess called Our Virgin Mother the Lady of Tranquility (also known as the Virgin, the Tranquil Lady, etc), who is something of an Arthurian deity complete with a grail myth. Whether supping from the cup is the source of Tristan's blessing I leave to the DM, though I had the idea that his search for the relic could tie into his quest. But it doesn't have to! I've left the quest vague for now (though it's still certainly appropriate to the character even without modification), and put in vows that I felt most appropriate to the character, though of course the book says they're ultimately up to the DM.

I've also put in bonds I felt fit the most. Obviously Tristan hasn't met the other characters yet but it seems likely those are the opinions he'd end up forming.

Anyone with thoughts should feel free to let me know.

I didn't mean to suggest you had to have a tie to the Witching Troll in the same way the other three do. What do you think of having been captured by a Green Knight type figure or some form of malicious fey? Then freed by the others he would still need the group to guide him out of the fey realm. Similar purpose in the short run (the Glowering Night?) could help bind them all together in the long run.

Make free with the infobox; it's there for the taking (besides, I learned those tricks from others).

I'm fine with him having been trapped by anything the DM thinks would fit most with the story. It could be as simple as finding him trapped beneath a tipped boulder surrounded by the long-rotted skeletons of a few goblins and his poor horse. And as long as the group isn't wandering around beating up children and stealing their lunch money it won't be difficult at all to find motivation for Tristan to stick with them. Maybe he shares some enemy with the Witching Troll or one of the other members of the party. Maybe he's seen them in his dreams and believes his goddess intends for him to be with them for a time.

In addition to all that, here's my second character, a dwarven woman called Gemheart ("Gemheart" being a translation of her dwarven surname - she never offers her full untranslated name to foreigners). She's a mercenary from a frozen dwarven land, fierce and proud. Like most dwarves she is easily insulted and slow to forgive, traits that have gotten her into trouble in the kingdoms of the younger races. She's recently recovered the legendary weapon of a long-dead ancestor thanks to the Witching Troll: Dwarves can live for centuries and the year and a day she owes the Troll is nothing compared to the glory of reclaiming this lost relic.

I've left her bonds open for now.

Gemheart's signature weapon is an ancient-looking battle axe. It is well-crafted (-1 weight) and sharp (+2 piercing).[/sblock]

DW - OOC

Our world really consists of two worlds, existing side by side. There is the magical one, called the Monster Kingdom and the mundane one. The mundane world is very much like our historical one (except that magic does actually exist in it).

The Monster Kingdom is itself divided into two, the Fey, and the not Fey. Fairies, Sprites, Dryads and the like are Fey. Goblins, Trolls, Elves and so forth are not. The importance placed on this distinction varies quite a lot (something like the how being a Muggle is viewed in the Harry Potter series).

Similarly, the mundane world is also divided into two. Those who believe in the old gods (the pagan gods for want of a better description) and those that believe in the White God (Christianity essentially). While the old gods, or at least their supporters, may jostle among themselves for ascendency, they still recognise each others existence. They believe that the heavens are shared, The supporters of the White God, however, do not. They deny the existence of all other gods, along with their creation myths, claims to dominion, etc.

Into this world comes Tristan. Now Tristan is certainly not the only Paladin in the world (so no snowflak-iness there). The White God has many. The other gods also have their own divine or inspired warriors. So the Paladin is not itself problematic. But Tristan, unlike other Paladins, is going to have to work not only with with a Priest of another god but also with members of the Monster Kingdom.

So the question is can Tristan do this? Can he see past the dictates of his religion to be able to make the distinction between good and bad based on the actions of the individual, not their beliefs or race? A zealot, I think, could not. Hence my comment about the young Tristan above.

I'm not against character's who buck the established standard per say. Hittar Vain, a Tiefling in the service of the Kingsmarch in Isida's The True Kings was one of my own forays in to that territory. Indeed, the internal conflicts that arise are one of the appealing things about playing such characters. I'm something of a fan of paladins because of this potential. But many are not.

The concept of an older character who has left behind the simple certainties of youth is promising. I also like the idea of a goddess called Our Virgin Mother the Lady of Tranquility (also known as the Virgin, the Tranquil Lady, etc). In the early days of Christianity, the boundaries between religions could be quite fluid. Christianity sometimes took on some of the rituals and trappings of existing religions. The Lady of Tranquility has the feel of a Virgin Mary cult blended with a mother earth or fertility or virtue figure. It suggests sect that recognises the value of understanding and adaption vs confrontation. Which is good.

I think that Good might be an better fit that Lawful. There will be some Tristan meets who could be called criminals (um, Trickle), and many who are truly unbelievers (the Fey have no gods, for example). Not all of them will be adversaries. Lawful is going to present more of an ongoing challenge. I will leave this one for you to decide.

I am going to wind back the quests. The quests are not like codes or favoured enemies in other games. i.e. something you pick at the start, which serve to define the character's capabilities and are enduring. There is no requirement to be questing all the time. Quest are Moves, they are something that will be emerge from the fiction. They are an agreement between you and your deity. They come with obligations. Choose carefully when deciding when to make a task into a quest. I'll PM you.

Wow. That was pretty long and ponderous. I going to put it down to sleep depravation. Um, here's the short version:

Sure. I think we can work with that. But if Tristan goes all Lawful Stupid, I'm going to bring the meta-divine smack-down.
