D&D 5E Is it just me or does Tiamat kind of blow in Tyranny of Dragons?

Really? So she can take 5 legendary actions per round? That's changes things quite a bit! Just started playing and I must have misread that rule. Well thank you. Ignore this thread then! lol

.

Yes, that alone makes her absolutely horrifying.

Personally, i'd also give her a healthy dose of cleric spells, but that's me.

I love that she has 5 legendary resistance/actions. I'd really like to see a full range of legendary monsters, some with just 1 point, others up to 5 like Tiamat, not just 3 like it is throughout MM.

Yeah, i'm sure we'll see them tinkering with this rule as the game evolves.

And about 800 HP. I wouldn't mind 630 they have her at but a Ancient Red is too close. Then again I'd have toned the dragons down just a bit across the board.

You do realize that this is just her Aspect yes?

God's don't have discorporation - their Aspects do, meaning that when the god's aspect is defeated - the essence of the god returns to its home plane to recover. To truly kill Tiamat, you would need to travel to her fortress in Avernus, and confront her there.... That would make for an epic storyline to be sure.

Were I to run such a campaign - I would alter Tiamat's stats as follows:

Tiamat (Avernus)

  • Increase her CR to 35.
  • Remove Discorporation (only applies to aspects)
  • Increase HPs to 999
  • Keep all of her resistance/immunities from her aspect.
  • Grant her spellcasting as a 9th level Cleric and 9th level Wizard, (aka INT + 20 arcane spells, and WIS + 20 divine spells).
  • Grant her the ability to use quicken Spell, twin spell and heighten spell as a sorcerer, and 20 Spell points. This will give her a much needed bonus action.
  • Grant her the following feats: Alert, Elemental Adept
  • Grant her Lair Actions.

If slain in Avernus, Tiamat herself has been slain. Ressurecting a god is a monumental task, and requires magic beyond that of a 9th level Wish or Miracle spell.

Yes OMG that would be an epic campaign!

Wait a minute, is this another case of a creature only being able to use some of its powers (in this case breath weapon) during the turn of other creatures/enemies but not on its own?

It would require epic help as well - as the PCs could not hope to defeat her alone.... Perhaps recruiting the help of Zariel (who wants to see Tiamat deposed/removed from Avernus) and his fiendish minions. Tiamat of course, could draw the aide of those who enjoy her company, in addition to her own Abashi devils (sp) and her Ancient Dragon consorts.

yes. That's what legendary actions are.

And Lair actions are a second initiative entry for an extra action, but only in/near the lair.

It gets its own actions AND extra actions keyed off the turns of players. Some get lair actions as well.
