Anyone here know anything about Macs?

So, my sound just suddenly disappeared. Like completely. I can't seem to get it back. I have a Macbook air, and I updated to Yosemite, or whatever the new OS is called. What a piece of garbage. If it's not one problem, it's another.

lets keep this civil thanks (some text deleted)

So far Yosemite has worked fine for me on my late 2013 Macbook Pro. Did you check which audio output device is selected? (obvs... I know)

Sometimes my Macbook gets confused when I use different audio outputs, ie HDMI or optical.

Not a Mac Guy, in fact I bloody hate the things despite having to do basic support on them,
Tell me about it. I hate the damn thing. The only reason I have a Mac is because when I went to get a new laptop, Windows 8 had just come out, and I couldn't find a computer without it. I bought a Windows 8 laptop with a touch screen. That lasted about 3 days. I returned it. I couldn't do work on it. The stupid tiles garbage and the various programs I had to use didn't want to work well together. I couldn't go from one program window to another without having to change from the tiles garbage to the new and terrible desktop screen.
but it sounds like you're not alone. It seems that the issues range from audio scheme being changed, to incorrect output devices being selected. Here are a couple of things to check out, to try and fix the issue:

So... I don't seem to have any output devices on my Mac.

Also, I tried resetting the PRAM, but hat didn't do anything. All I got while holding down the keys to reset the PRAM was a flashing grey screen.

Huh... the internal speakers should at least show up. Headphones don't work either, right?

Maybe re-install Yosemite?

On a somewhat related note, I still have 3 months to purchase Applecare as a new mac owner... might just do that (I always though extended warranties were dumb, but in this case...).

You might have a hardware or a software problem.

When holding down the keys to reset PRAM, you should see the screen flash between grey and black as long as you hold down the keys. When the screen flashes to grey, you should also hear the startup chime. This is handled by the EFI before the OS kicks in at all, so it should bypass any software issues.

If you aren't hearing this chime, it is likely a hardware issue. Try plugging headphones into the headphone jack and resetting the PRAM just in case you hear some sound coming out. I doubt you will. (The startup chime is always routed through the internal speakers on recent machines whether or not you have a headphone plugged in, which is rather annoying.)

If this doesn't give you any sound, I'm confident you have a hardware problem. Contact your local Genius Bar, Apple support, or local Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Nope. No sound from any source.

Maybe re-install Yosemite?
That's what I'm going to do later tonight. Right now I need to finish some reports. After I'm done, I'm going to try and reinstalling Yosemite.

That's what I used to think. My GF got a warranty on one of her computers and I thought it was a waste of money until I stepped on her computer and wrecked it. She got it at Best Buy and their warranty is actually pretty good. We got the original price refunded (as store credit, but still) for the computer, and it was already over a year old.

Hopefully I can get this fixed without having to replace it.
