A cleric can't take Weapon Focus() or Weapon Proficiency() at 1st level. You must have a BAB of +1 to take these feats.

Scrolls are the fighter/cleric's best friend. I spend all my mem'd/metamagic'd spells on buffing myself, and keep around scrolls to cast Remove This, Cure That, etc.

Yes, multiple spellcasters can collaborate on crafting a single item. DMG p241. The caster with the craft feat pays the xp cost.

You could also give a fall range, say 60 feet. Then for every point the character makes the save by they catch the rope 5' up. Then, of course, on their next round(s) they have to spend action(s) climbing.

Well, my suggestion is for the DM to stop trying to find a solution to the powerful NPC. That's the PC's job! Let them scratch their heads about it and try their own solutions. For many of the "impossible" puzzles I've DM'd, I discretely listen to their brain-storming from behind the screen...
