    non-4e D&D Players . . .

The previews and the discussions have been interesting, yet disheartening. According to what I’ve read in the previews, Essentials is aimed at new players as well as lapsed players. The whole concept seems too confusing for new players. How do they tell the difference between 4E and...

Edition wars...a GOOD thing? or if not, an APPROPRIATE thing?

How does making my own D&D solve the problems of diminished community and brand mismanagement? Also, how do my viewpoints "rain on your parade"? You already have "your way", as you put it. How does my opinion affect your enjoyment of 4E? I'm not being facetious or argumentative; I truly would...

Edition wars...a GOOD thing? or if not, an APPROPRIATE thing?

Exactly. But, it's not just the diminished community that troubles the 3e fans. There is also the perception that the D&D brand is being reinterpreted, disrespected, or otherwise mismanaged. This perception further alienates the 3E community from the 4E community.

Edition wars...a GOOD thing? or if not, an APPROPRIATE thing?

Agreed. But, what else are we supposed to while we're bored at work? Play solitaire? At least if I'm typing, I can create the illusion that I'm doing something productive. LOL.

That' sarcasm, right? Just making sure.:)

Edition wars...a GOOD thing? or if not, an APPROPRIATE thing?

I agree, but you should be careful about implying that someone is stupid because they refute something in your list--you could start an editions war. EEEK! Both sides of the debate are at fault in perpuating the editions war; I don't believe there is any question about that. The question...

Edition wars...a GOOD thing? or if not, an APPROPRIATE thing?

How about this question: Why can't people accept negative criticism concerning 4E? Speaking for myself, I am quite happy with Pathfinder and 3rd Edition. I express negative opinions about 4E and WotC because my opinions regarding 4E and WotC are negative. The editions war comes into play when...

Edition wars...a GOOD thing? or if not, an APPROPRIATE thing?

In my opinion, the editions war has come about due to the alienation of a segment of the gaming community brought about by decisions made by the current owners of the D&D brand. This alienation made the editions war unavoidable, so in a sense it is "appropriate". On the other hand, the...

What's really at stake in the Edition Wars

I have never played 4E, but I have no problem--in game terms--with the second-wind/healing surge mechanic (as I understand it). But, I must say that it is easier to suspend disbelief with the rest-or-magic method of restoring hit points vs. the healing surge mechanic. Of course, the healing...

What's really at stake in the Edition Wars

The Editions War is a splintered cohort. The Editions War is snark and platitudes. The Editions War is WOW comparisons and New Coke analogies. The Editions War is also anectodal "evidence" and attempts to define reality. My experience contradicts your experience, so I reject your effort to...

What's really at stake in the Edition Wars

I don't play 4E or WOW. But, when someone states that "4E is too videogamey", I understand what they are trying to convey--that, in their opinion, 4E plays more like a videogame than a PNP roleplaying game. I don't require elaboration. Nor do I consider the statement to be trolling or...

What's really at stake in the Edition Wars

Just prior to the announcement of 4E, the print versions of "Dragon" and "Dungeon" magazines were cancelled and replaced with digital versions. At the same time that 4e was announced, the fans were informed that the "Forgotten Realms" setting would be totally re-worked and that WotC would not be...

What defines the "edition war" and why are participants / moderators opposed to them?

My perspective: In the current environment, the editions war has evolved into a form political correctness where any negative criticism of 3.5, 4E, or Pathfinder is automatically denounced--as perpetuation of the editions war--by mini-mods (and in some forums by the actual moderators) that have...

for d20 Lovers, what in your opinion would be an evolutionary step in d20 games?

I think modularity would be an enormous evolutionary step. Think about it...GMs are already doing this on an individual level using house rules incorporated from other systems (e.g., Pathfinder, Trailblazer, M&M, Conan, etc.). How about a POD service that allows a GM to construct player's...

    [Trailblazer] Turn Undead

I have found this to be true, as well. Advancing monsters can be a tedious process at times, but I enjoy throwing curveballs at my players. Sometimes, a ghoul can be more than just a ghoul. It's one of the reasons I dig the 3.5 system so much. I have more problems coming up with maps and...

This is extremely useful information. Thanks so much!

    [Trailblazer] Turn Undead

I see your point, and I'm genuinely impressed by the amount of thought you folks have put into revising the 3.5 rules. Like Scurvy Platypus, I'm having trouble wrapping my brain around the DM making a saving throw in place of the cleric/paladin player making a turn check. I understand that your...

    [Trailblazer] Turn Undead

The 3.5 turn undead rules definitely needed to be revised, but I'm not sure that having the DM make a Will save for every undead within range is a whole lot simpler. Unearthed Arcana has optional turn undead rules where the cleric makes a level check vs. each undead's "Turn DC". In this case...

    TRAILBLAZER - PDF Release - Discussion/Questions/Errata

I am profoundly impressed with your new product, Trailblazer. The mathematical analyses were very enlightening, and the revisions to the 3E rules that you made based on those analyses were right on the money. Although it doesn't have the lavish illustrations or the comprehensiveness that Paizo's...
