Breathing New Life into your Monsters

Going back to 3.5... Any ideas to 4e-ify it?

I've begun considering some of this stuff on my blog, lately. One of the big complaints about 3.x was how unbalanced the game could become given the ability and propensity of some players to create mechanically optimized builds. It is pretty clear that this was a major consideration in the...

Begging to be errata'd: Archer Ranger At-Wills

It is good when you need to kill a minion. It is also worthwhile for trick shots of various sorts. -Stuart

    Dashing Swordsman PrC?

A couple people have told me that the one I created (on a lark) worked out pretty well for them. -Stuart

    Alternate Hydra

Ack. I'd meant to peg the heads at Medium. I'm probably going to revise this based on the comments I've received. Thanks. Stuart

    Forked Thread: Mage-Brute (revisited)

Hmmm... have you considered Favored Soul? You could be a Favored Soul of a dragon-god to get the draconic flavor, and you'd be far more competent in combat. -Stuart

    Alternate Hydra

Hmmm... interesting thought - though it is possible that just raising their Reflex defense would be enough. -Stuart

    Alternate Hydra

Hydras are, in my mind, always tricky creatures to stat up. When I opened the 4e Monster Manual, I was disappointed in how they handled the write-up. It didn't really give the feel of multiple heads, and they had done away with the regeneration. Then I had an epiphany. Why not write up a hydra...

The many faces of the Hydra

I'm working on a version that models the hydra as multiple creatures, myself. -Stuart

    The Surprise round anomally

Ummm... except that the surprise round doesn't start until someone is surprised. If an orc is waiting behind a rock, he hasn't surprised me. When he jumps out from behind it, he surprises me. Then the surprise round begins. -Stuart

    TWF ranger weapon choices

Personally, I like the versatility of weapons that can be thrown... particularly since most of your powers double as ranged ones. -Stuart

    Zombie Hulk Solo Lvl 6

Honestly, this seems like a bad idea... about 400 hp at 3rd level? This fight will take forever. Some suggestions: Rise again - this is a big problem, since it doesn't scale evenly with a solo creature. I'd advise not giving it full hp when it rises. Maybe the equivalent of a healing surge...

    The SRD under the GSL

Trademarking would make more sense in this case. I could easily use the word Beholder to refer to a totally-non-eye-tyrant sort of monster. I doubt that WotC would have a leg to stand on IP law-wise. While they could easily change the GSL (or SRD) to retroactively disallow such things, it seems...

    The SRD under the GSL

As far as I know, WotC doesn't actually have a trademark on any of those names (they aren't, for instance, listed in the notice in the Monster Manual). Moreover, one of them is the Succubus... which is a common usage term. I suspect that this was an oversight in the drafting of the GSL (which...

    The SRD under the GSL

That was clearly the intent, I grant you. Unfortunately, I don't know that the license supports that intent. The GSL doesn't grant you a license to use those terms, but I don't think it limits your ability to do so either... -Stuart

    The SRD under the GSL

The SRD seems to serve near-opposite purposes under the GSL and the OGL. The 3.x-era SRD was a listing of open content that you could use with very few restrictions. Things that were not in the SRD but were in Wizards' books were considered closed content and could not be republished under the...

Ranger should have been Martial Controllers

Why wouldn't divine striker work? Conceptually, it is fine: someone who is designed to seek out and strike down enemies of the faith or whatnot. An avenging paladin can be played this way... and I've thought of playing a ranger or rogue multiclassed into paladin just to get this sort of flavor...
