D&D 4E lack of non-combat crunch is my biggest gripe with 4e atm

Sorry for the inactivity, busy weekend with two game sessions and a 9 hour trip back to school. Pretty much spot on. Although I can't say I know of the exalted background points, but it sounds like good stuff. I don't see how a modular system that does not inhibit the core game and is open...

D&D 4E lack of non-combat crunch is my biggest gripe with 4e atm

And nothing that i want to create here is not going to bypass p42 beyond a few extra numbers on the dc's. When I say 4e's designers have sacrificed non-combat mechanics, I don't mean that they didn't make any. I'm saying they used more time on combat mechanics than non-combat mechanics. I'm...

D&D 4E lack of non-combat crunch is my biggest gripe with 4e atm

Because, as I wrote in the OP, I took them out of this context because they are what the game has to offer, and I feel that they are acceptable mechanics but that there is room for others that enhance them. I never meant that I wanted to remove them from the game and replace them with these...

D&D 4E lack of non-combat crunch is my biggest gripe with 4e atm

Hated wizards, too much paperwork for me, alas it was the easiest way to play the game on the same field as the rest. Although I guess what I'm thinking about here would also cause more paperwork. what I want here should not be restricted to wizards/magicians, it should be pretty open to anyone...

D&D 4E lack of non-combat crunch is my biggest gripe with 4e atm

burntgerbil: Indeed thats probably something I would consider doing. I think the core rules will be easy enough, the main problem will be generating enough choices that are balanced and interesting. But with a core rule system its easy for others to add to the system aswell. LostSoul: exactly...

D&D 4E lack of non-combat crunch is my biggest gripe with 4e atm

ExploderWizard: Mostly World of Darkness, although I guess GURPS can be inspiring as well. Dark Heresy is interesting aswell, but thats a system that is way too rigid in what you can pick or not. Also, fear-checks can be fancy when used rarely and when the consequences are pretty foreseeable...

D&D 4E lack of non-combat crunch is my biggest gripe with 4e atm

thanks for the replies everyone, think I'll start from the end and go back. I can agree that the rogue and fighter have not really been any more non-combat oriented in 3e. But I might not have made this point; I can't stand 3e(well I'm no big fan, I'll play it if my friends want to play it...

D&D 4E lack of non-combat crunch is my biggest gripe with 4e atm

I was going to make a big thread about how i would have liked to fix that, but I found that hard to write properly in a short amount of time. I am instead going to write quickly about this bug thats scratching at my neck.:hmm: Basically, I love 4e's more strict rules and exception based design...

    Space RPGs?

Why has nobody mentioned wh40k: dark Heresy? Although maybe not 100% space oriented, I bet I could have made a long campaign based inside one of the imperial ships/fleets. you can't have a space opera before you are floating through space in a ship that looks like a cathedral. The game...

    The trouble with 365_Bazaar

Rulebook: "An immediate action must be triggered by an event or an action on another combatant’s turn." Thats how I would read that rule at least. Immediate reactions caused by special weapon attacks would go as "an event". It looks pretty much like a catch-all "This is an 'event' and we can...

Help me use these blank six-sided dice!

I somestimes use my wizard pack of d6's on my battlemap to illustrate crates, houses, walls and whatnot. Blank d6's would be even better at it since nobody would accidentally steal a wall for some fireballing.

D&D 4E Obligatory dump stats in 4e: the irrelevance of Intelligence

Why doesn't Int help initiative if that is the strongest of dex/int? As far as i can see, the same reasons that the highest of dex/int gives you a bonus to light AC and ref-defense, should apply to initiative. Having a quick wit should be just as helpful as a quick body imo.

    D&D 4E I have 4e but there's a catch...

My condolences on the leak. Not that i fear this will cause as much trouble as it does for computer games. You have to be a desperate man to print out 1000 pages of scanned pdf's to save a few bucks. On the bright side, i prophesied it would be leaked two weeks before release date, and now its...

    D&D 4E 4e Aquatic Beasties?

Not a big fan of games beneath water myself. Amphibians are acceptable since you can meet them on land or in areas where they can use shallow water tactically... but i would hate to see WotC spend large amount of the MM on water-races that won't see alot of action. there are two things i would...

Minions. The DM knows 'em. Do the players?

If there is a bunch of kobold minions blocking proper view of what the real guys behind them are holding, i would not allow my players to figure out who's who without rolling a insight/spot/whatever-check. (warning, no real tactics here but visual ones, might not work InGame) If there are...

    Action Point as Rewards

One of the only home brew rules I'm thinking about for 4e; granting action points for suboptimal but in-character choices. example: Character has made a point out of hating spiders? if he is normally a fighter, and meets spiders and changes to ranged mode, i might reward one action point to...

    Excerpt: Swarms

i think people are thinking about the pit fiend aura, which i think worked in such a fashion that it did damage twice(when entered(/pit fiends turn) and when it was your turn). i don't have time to check the differences on the auras, but this might be interesting from a exception-based...

    When did you enjoy 3.x?

I like playing 3.5, as long as i don't have to spend a week prepping a optimized build. I can't stand GMing 3.5 when my players biggest joy in life is optimizing their characters so much that i have to spend 5x more time prepping encounters. I can manage GM'ing a 3.5 houseruled edition in the...

    4th Edition WITHOUT minis

my current dream: make a wargaming/gaming room with a couch-corner and a tabletop-corner for 40k-stuff. Use the 40k table for dnd combat, having x" strings/sticks to measure out lengths. (And if technology improves/cheapens, i'll be getting myself a 3d printer and use that to create fancy...

First house rule: Tieflings have small horns

this is imo the best tiefling art that i've seen as of yet. Horns aren't hooked up to her eyebrows(as far as we can see) avoiding that permament elephant-man frown that i dislike on the other pictures. the tail bothers me very little, even though i prefer those who aren't too big. in the end...
