No Prebuff - Round 1 - Damage Rankings

There is also the Oil of Purple Worm and OathBow. There are no rules against magic weapons, but would likely be frowned upon as 5e allows for a no magic item game, which is what most builds use as a baseline despite most groups not playing that way. Is an uncommon magic item acceptable True...

Can you expound on what you mean by manipulate things?

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Can we all take a moment and laugh at ourselves? Gentle reminder that this is just a game. It is a 2nd level spell, and I doubt that we would be able to apply this level of physics when the game is a simulation of reality, reduced to have fun. At some point the simulationist has to give way to...

D&D 5E What jobs does a party need fulfilled?

Treantmonk defined 5 out of combat roles and 4 in combat roles. 5e has tried to tease out many of their jobs (see the Healer feat and nerfing of in-combat healing). What other jobs do you find typically needing to be fulfilled in any given party, or at least one feels a need to cover when they...

No Prebuff - Round 1 - Damage Rankings

I agree that Damage Now > Damage later, but having no arena for the rest of the day's attacks closes you and followers of this thread from these "many players" Just as players that have 8 encounters per day with 3 short rests may be in a minority due to the large variation from table to table...

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Does anyone have a link to a monster database that includes their attacks and if those attacks are ranged or not? Bonus points if it also lists the spells they know. I'd like to find the CR breakpoints for the spell.

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Which is why I'm exploring Levitate so much. On a Sorcerer one can levitate 2 squishies, 2 baddies, or one of each, whichever seems to be the best. Previously I was thinking of keeping this till high level, but am afraid that ranged actions would be as effective if they were up in the air. But...

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Does anyone know when ranged attacks are common? Or when spells are common? Knowing what level the spell simply makes a foe harder to reach would be nice to know how long I can pull this cheese.

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Could you elaborate on why the spell is so overpowered? My build happens to have it and I'd love to know how to abuse it. I've explored Command, Minor Illusion, Silent Image, and Mage Hand. But Suggestion is one that is so open ended I didn't know how to approach using it in real clever ways...

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

That is a great point. I looked up the weights of various animals and a big strong horse is at this 500 lb limit, same with an anoconda and lion. An elephant is over this limit and sometimes 3x this limit. An ogre, as seen in harry potter would probably be pushing it.

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

The cliff idea doesn't work as you want as Levitate says they float gently to the ground when the spell ends, regardless of how it ends. The cliff would simply make them go away, not killed. Given that we have 10 minutes, it shouldn't be hard to pelt them to death.

    D&D 5E The God Sorlock

I've read over that list, which is a great list for maximum possible damage. However my intent was to compare myself with a standard fighter not with the DPR king that you cited. I would have preferred to have some standard for how much damage a DM could expect from a player trying to optimize...

No Prebuff - Round 1 - Damage Rankings

ForgReaver, would you mind linking each build to the post where it was introduced? Compacting the justification for damage into a single line is insufficient and hard to read. Personally I would have allowed the players 2 rounds and to take the average of both rounds. This would have allowed...

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

When one looks at damage from the perspective of monster action reduction, then we see the following. That an OP striker may be able to take down a single for in 1-2 rounds, but there are 4 more. If the battle lasts 5 rounds then he has eliminated 3 monster actions than if he was doing nothing...

    D&D 5E Levitate is a save-or-die spell

Unlike other save-or-suck spells, Levitate doesn't allow for saves past the first save. Levitate becomes a save or die spell under the following conditions: The target has no or a weak ranged attack They can't reach the ceiling nor the floor 20' away They don't have a fly speed If they fail...

    D&D 5E The God Sorlock

I've been given some food for thought that has caused me to reevaluate many spells. I thought that KPR was a great way to abstract damage dealers into an easy to compare number, regardless of level. But the discussion here has made me look at the minimization of total monster actions as a...

    D&D 5E The God Sorlock

I've swapped Scorching Ray for Dragon's Breath. You've all helped me better understand how long days are composed of multiple encounters with only a few short rests to break them up. This made me rethink what endurance looked like and I think the build is better for it. I've added endurance...

    D&D 5E The God Sorlock

Would a switch to Spiritual Weapon enable me to handle the 8 encounter day with only 3 short rest? I had initially thrown it out because the Nova attack sequence was bonus action starved. I thought by level 7 I would have enough spell points to quicken most rounds. But it seems that 3 encounters...

    D&D 5E The God Sorlock

I've seen this variance in other posts, which is why I was gravitating towards the sorcerer and his ability to frontload when the day was expected to be short, then spread it out with quicken Eldritch blast when headed into a cave.
