A few Battlefield Archer and other Ranger CS responses

    1. Battlefield Experience to-hit bonus: Feb 13: Q: The last sentence for Battlefield Experience (p113, feature of Battlefield Archer) states: "In addition, ANY attack made against a quarry receives a +1 bonus to attack rolls." Since I cannot find anything to indicate otherwise, does that mean...

    Dagger Implement Weirdness

According to RAW in the PHB, most likely. According to the FAQ and subsequent CSR answers, no. 17. When you are using a magic weapon as an implement, like a Holy Avenger or a Pact Dagger, what benefits do you get from the weapon? You gain any bonuses listed under Enhancement, Critical and...

    Sneak Attack and powers

One target per round that you have CA against, gets the Sneak Attack damage. (There's a feat that allows it to occur a second time, but that's an exception to the rule). See the PHB Errata for a clarification: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/files/UpdatePH.pdf

Are Archer Rangers getting the Shaft?

It's one feature among many. But if you are flanking an enemy you can get the +1 bonus for Prime Shot (no one's nearer than you, they're equally near), and +2 for CA. That makes the OA (which you have Defensive Mobility for) acceptable. Then there's Called Shot (Dragon Mag) which adds 5 damage...

    Battlefield archer question?

I actually asked CS about this a while back. The answer I got has since been incorporated into the FAQ post and wiki here on ENWorld. From Joe at Wizard's CS: The mechanic of having to start with the nearest enemy as your quarry appears to be intended to prevent the ranger from going straight...

    Shuriken/Daggers: Rogue AOE Fail

Thanks for posting that Cirex, that's *exactly* how I believe it *should* work. If 4E's design philosophy is all about the fun, then mysteriously making throwing weapons non-functional for these powers while you can fire a crossbow 9 times instead makes no sense.

    Retainers, henchmen, hirelings and redshirts?

Is there anything covering hiring mercenaries etc. to carry your gear, walk in front, take care of your horses and so on, or is this just something the DM needs to wing/houserule?

    Off-hand weapons. Meaningless?

p217: can hold & attack effectively with it in your offhand. Anything without it therefore, cannot be held and used effectively in the offhand. Rangers with the TWB fighting style get the exception to that.

    One-way concealment from forest edge?

Trees are solid objects that provide cover. They should be individually depicted on the map. "Foliage" is not solid and provides concealment; but arrows and fireballs can go through it.

    Shuriken/Daggers: Rogue AOE Fail

I asked this, due to a discussion I had regarding throwing weapons & rogue AOE powers (Blinding Barrage, Cloud of Steel, Steel Entrapment) CSR Tony responded: Now, no disrespect meant to Tony, but I've got incorrect answers from him before which were later corrected by others. So I asked...

    D&D 4E Official Unofficial 4E Rules FAQ

From Joe, the best CS rep of all: Ranger powers such as Twin Strike list as requirements "two melee weapons or a RANGED weapon". The weapon table on p219 appears to listed Ranged Weapons as a particular set, and heavy thrown weapons (hand axes, javalins) aren't part of that list. Can heavy...

    Hokuto no Hunter's Quarry

The response I got from customer service indicates you freely choose which attack against a Quarry gets the damage, after the fact. If one critted you can pick that one, if one target is close to death, pick that one. RP-wise, consider it a delayed effect.

    Sneak Attack + Critical Hit?

To put it in perspective, the difference between average damage and crit damage for HQ/SA/Curse is pretty small. 2.5 to 5.5 without feats.

    Stealth in Combat

I agree, it would definitely be helpful to get a detailed article on exactly how the designers intend stealth to work from WotC.

    Stealth in Combat

Leugren: I believe you're still thinking of stealth in previous edition (2 or 3) terms. Again, this is the point you don't seem to be getting. Stealth is not an action by itself. It's part of whatever action you are taking. You don't "roll for stealth" just because you happen to be behind...

    Stealth in Combat

P188: "If a creature has unblocked line of sight to you (that is, you lack any cover or concealment), the creature automatically sees you (no Perception check required). " P122: Shadow Stride Rogue Utility 10 "You must be hiding to use this power. You can move your speed. At the end of that...

    Stealth in Combat

Oph: the penalty is to the stealth check done related to attempting to move stealthily more than 2 squares. I've seen nothing that indicates it affects subsequent checks. Eg, you run through partial darkness past a camp of guards eating dinner. You take -10 to your check to do so, vs their...

    Stealth in Combat

Normally the passive perception. Active if the creatures are actively looking (eg, spending a minor action each turn) for stealthers. Normally only the target is relevant, but the DM may decide other creatures are involved.

Blasts and Line of Effect Question

Unless they're treating the statue differently from a solid wall, then it's no wonder this is confusing. If it's the same as a wall, then either that square with the goblin shouldn't be affected, or the r1c2 square should be. I would have to guess they're treating the statue as a partial...

    Stealth in Combat

Right. The stealth check is part of the attack, and his previous move wasn't stealthy, so there's no penalty for the movement. Where a stealth movement penalty applies, is in a situation where a rogue is moving through the bushes, trying to remain unseen, but moves 6 instead of 2. The enemies...
