WotC Baldur's Gate III Announced; Powered by D&D 5E

The developers of the Divinity: Original Sin series, Laria Studios, officially announced Baldur’s Gate III.

The new game will use the D&D 5^th Edition rules as the backbone for their system and the storyline will be set directly after the events in the upcoming adventure Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus. The game will be released on PC and the new Google Stadia video game streaming service. The announcement came with a teaser trailer below. More information is expected at the video game and electronics conference E3 next week.

The game isn't quite available for pre-order, but you can add it to your wishlist on Steam. The Steam listing also gives some idea of the features and gameplay options, as it lists Single Player, Multi-Player, Online Multiplayer, Local Multiplayer, Co-Op, Online Co-Op, Local Co-Op, Shared/Split Screen, and Cross-Platform Multiplayer.

The announcement follows a tease last week with an image of the stylized "III" which left the title of the game as part of the filename.

If the Verdan are in, that would be two races capable of sex/gender shifting magically.

And then there are Changelings, if they choose to bring in some Eberron flavour.

Both Inexile and Obsidian tried to get the rights to BG 3, along with Larian. If one adds Beamdog that is four companies fighting to make a real RPG. Until now instead of making deals with these companies they'd been defiling the realms with idle clickers and other subpar games. I'm glad Nathan Stewart finally pulled WotC's together and went with Larian, but it horrifying that it took them that long to make good choices.

I wonder if NW Online will have a tie into the city of Baldur's Gate, they tend to like tying their expansions to D&D APs. Or will this one be off limits?

Both Inexile and Obsidian tried to get the rights to BG 3, along with Larian.

Larian can make BG3, Obsidian can make a sequel to Planescape: Torment, and Inexile can make Icewind Dale 3. Problem solved.

I'd prefer giving Inexile a new region, perhaps Kara Tur, Al Qadim Sequel, or the Old Empires Region of Faerun.

I would rather give them (or someone) Dark Sun. Those old Dark Sun CRPGs are underrated classics.

They're overlooked because they're between the old SSI Gold Box games and Baldur's Gate.

Looks like there will be a type of "revised ranger" in the game....that will also be released for testing over the summer.
