D&D 5E Best warlock Invocation to go with agonizing blast?

Just curious are the level prerequisites class or character level. Levitate at will would be pretty snazzy IMO if character level.

Normally though id go thousand faces and misty image on a bard.

It's class level, of course, just like everything else in 5E. A Fighter 17 who takes one level in Wizard does not suddenly get to start casting Wish.

Levitate at will is still pretty interesting anyway, especially if your DM builds 3D battlespaces/adventuring spaces for you to take advantage of. Having multiple routes over/under/around/through things is fun. Grid combat doesn't support this idiom very well, but you don't have to stick to grid combat.

I thought that (as I recently found out) things like cantrips scale with character level; but for things like invocations id say they are dependent on your class level. In the same way a wizard 4/fighter 1 doesn't suddenly gain Extra Attack.

You needed more reason to make is a splash class instead of giving incentive for higher warlock levels?

People who splash Warlock are going to splash it early for eldritch blast and hex. They're not going to wait until 12th level to get better invocations; the characters this ruling benefits are characters who are trying to advance Warlock concurrently with another class, akin to the original model of multiclassing that the 3e/5e multiclassing system has always served poorly.

Or, alternatively, we could follow what was intended and clarified so that there's a reason to want 12 levels of warlock. Invocations are the draw for the class.
