Wow, I haven't bought a D&D mini in about two years now (I bought one of the original starter sets and one of the booster packs). I wasn't thrilled with not knowing precisely what minis I was getting, and my fears played out. I couldn't believe the cruddy quality (of course, I'm used to painting my own, so my standards may be a bit higher than others).

Now that I know what I'd get on certain D&D mini purchases, I think I'll pass. I prefer putting together dragon minis and painting them, anyway.

As I said before, my $75 is more valuable to me than this thing. I'm sure it looks nice, but that's two game books and a module, or 5 packs of D&D minis, or about 5 to 10 PDF's.

I'll get this one at a discount somewhere. The plastic flame has the same problem the fire elementals in the WotDQ set have, good sculpt, translecent plastic - no real detail. They wash the whole thing in red paint/ink in order to bring out details on a RED plastic piece. Anyone with a sense of color knows it doesn't work that way.

By way of contrast, I used a black wash over my elementals and found a ton of detail, my son said it looked better but was still lacking, so I spent a few hours looking a fire and flame, went back and washed the whole thing in blue - WOW!! What a difference!. Unfortunately, I can't post pics, I don't have a scanner or a digi camera. After the blue wash I went back with the black and hit certain spots and I was VERY pleased with the results. I plan on doing the same thing to the plastic flame puke to see if I can garner similar results.

It can be acquired at far less than this. Of course, so too can the books and modules be acquired at far less than full retail...

I don't like the flaming puke but I got one coming from Amazon for $37 so I will just display it sans the flame.

I would like to use it in my game sometime but I rarely use dragons so it might be a while.

Ruler of the Dragons

(No, not the guy who tells others what to do - this CRD holds a ruler - the marks stop at 30cm/12", and he's a bit larger than that)
