A peridot dragon has a sleek, low-slung, wingless body with fine, yellow-green gleaming scales, which enables it to blend into the grasslands environment it favors. Prominent ear frills, reminiscent of a blue dragon's, twitch and bend as the dragon tracks sounds. A set of backward-pointing spines sweeps backward from the dragon's head.

Peridot dragons like to stalk and ambush their prey like a great cat, but they are also expert burrowers and will chase down their quarry or lie just below the soil in wait for a meal to move within range.

Combat
Combat text.

Breath Weapon (Su): A peridot dragon has one type of breath weapon, a cone of magma that deals fire damage.

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, a peridot dragon must hit with a claw or bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can rake.

Pounce (Ex): If a peridot dragon charges a foe, it can make a full attack, including two rake attacks.

Ripping Claws (Ex): The claw attacks of a peridot dragon are more deadly than normal dragons and deal twice as much damage as the claw attacks of other dragons of the same size. This double damage also applies to rake attacks.

Rake (Ex): When a peridot dragon is in a grapple, it can make four rake attacks at its full attack bonus, dealing damage as its claw attacks.

Psi-Like Abilities: 3/day—control air, energy ball (fire), truevenom; 1/day—fiery discorporation.

Skills: Hide, Listen, and Move Silently are class skills for peridot dragons.

I rather like Gothenem's idea of a cone of magma with damage spread over 2 rounds, rather than a plain vanilla cone of fire.

And let's remember Improved Grab + Constrict.

Finally got a chance to look at those aquatic dragons, RavinRay. They are excellent! If Dragon turned them down, then they've missed out (or else they have way too many good monsters available). Thanks for sharing them!

For peridot: What do you think about control air, energy ball, fiery discorporation as PLAs? I'm thinking of this dragon as being very fast, too, so maybe a Su or Sp ability to increase speed (including burrowing) as in expeditious retreat. What do you all think?

Thanks Freyar. I'll go through the XPH to check on those powers you suggested. In the meantime, for peridot dragon physical abilities I'm suggesting big cat strategies like a rake or rend ability, along with Improved Grab which was suggested earlier. This is my description of the dragon.

A peridot dragon has a sleek, low-slung, wingless body with fine, yellow-green gleaming scales, which enables it to blend into the grasslands environment it favors. Prominent ear frills, reminiscent of a blue dragon's, twitch and bend as the dragon tracks sounds. A set of backward-pointing spines sweeps backward from the dragons head.

Peridot dragons like to stalk and ambush their prey like a huge cat, but they are also expert burrowers and will chase down their quarry or lie just below the soil in wait for a meal to move within range.

Rake or rend sound good, and I like the description.

So, RavinRay, you're a real-life paleontologist? Is the field work as exciting as popular magazines make it sound? I'm also a scientist, but it's all desk work.

Here's a few requests for dragons:
Ivory dragon (terrain: perhaps in an old elephant graveyard or "regular" graveyards, breath weapon: animate dead-- skeletons)

Pearl dragon (strong magic users, cast Identify at will

And from 2nd ed:

Purple dragons

Orange dragons

Yellow dragons (not gold)

Skunk dragons (black with white stripes)

and maybe a few other combinations: a red, black and gold dragon

A green, black, and blue dragon
