Ha ha ha ha hee ho ha ha!

My group? Regard the DM as anything noteworthy or venture the slightly appreciative gesture for the work I put in? I'm sure you're joking, as I've never heard such an absurd statement in my life.

I DM out of my love for the game, nothing more. There's no other option, really. And I've never encountered a group that was different. In over two decades of gaming, at least 80% of which was as DM, I don't think I've ever even had a single, "Hey, thanks for running/hosting/etc. the game," directed at me.

Excuse me, I think my laughter caused some hemoraging.

Heh, I should get myself a collection plate. Except that if I was ever serious about, and I'm not, they would perform what we otherwise jokingly refer to as a 'railing kill'. Being that we game in a loft over the living room. I'd prefer to game and not suffer broken bones. ;)

But if it bothers you, just ignore it.

It doesn't bother me in particular. I'm looking forward to Valentine's Day, even. I brought up the issue to show how it would be a bad idea, PR-wise, for WotC or other publishers to try to push GM's Day. You might get some sales, but you'd also get a lot of ill-will out of it.

Besides, if we truly appreciate our GMs or anyone else in our lives, we really don't need ANYBODY -- businesses or otherwise -- reminding us to express our gratitude on some designated day. We should be doing it regularly in whatever way works.

This is true. But people are people, and they forget. Formalizing it means that folks get to make up for all the other times they forgot to express gratitutde. And there is something to be said for setting the one day aside as special, making the target feel that much more recognized.

By the basic logic, one should need no Valentine's Day, or Christmas. Nor shoudl one even need to celebrate a bnirthday. Would that be fun?

I don't have a problem with the idea of GM's Day in the slightest. I'm just poking at how the idea is being presented.

Oh. Sorry, I sort of misunderstood your earlier post...

Sure, and like Valentines Day, Mother's Day etc, GM's Day doesn't have to be comercialised if you don't want it to be. I was saying this from word go. You can always make them a dinner, or a pretty card, or run a game for them for once! First and foremost it's about saying thanks to the GM, and there are lots of ways of doing that. I kinda guessed that the whole GM's day thing would get commercialised, but it's never bothered me - it's a way to spread the word. And I like giving pressies, anyway!

As for the little bit of evangelising that we have done (asking people to get on the bandwagon, burgeoning idea etc) it's a fair cop there. I guess it's 'cos we think its a good idea, and one that we would like more people to know about. As you can see from this thread alone, a lot of people still haven't heard about it, so we're just trying to spread the word a little. I can also see what you mean about possibly creating Ill will if W/C came on board, and I like that, at least for the moment, it's been driven by the hobbiests and small web publishers. It feels more like something we're doing for ourselves. I'm hoping that people see it that way -as a positive thing, and not somethings GM's are doing to get their players to pat them on the back or as a money grabbing exercise. As I said in a related thread - it really needs to be player driven.

It makes me wonder who actually came up with the idea for mother's day - whether it was just someone who gave a little pressie to his mum each year, or someone in a department store who was pushing for an angle, or it was christianised version of some ancient ritual - like Easter and Christmas and so on. Ditto for Valentine's Day.

Oh, and by all means, poke fun. Please! :D

Its just a little thing to pay them for their time

A good GM will be showered with gifts and wives! if their girlfriend doesn't mind
My wednesday GURPS GM is fun, does a good job. I buy him food, chocolates, alcohol, and whatever I think would fit him and his personality
this can be creepy when it gets to "And heres your backrub" but Im avoiding that, even though he asked for one.
I see a good DM's time as being worth something, even if they enjoy the game immensely, its still a little thankyou for all their efforts.
