[EW] 20 worst Comic Book movies

Anyone who puts Daredevil on a "worst of" list has clearly not seen the director's cut on DVD.

The theatrical version? Yeah, not great (though not, I think, as bad as some people believe). But the director's cut? Far better in every respect. Not just better, but good.

And count me among those who think that both X3 and Spider-Man 3 (what's with the 3s always sucking in comic book series?) should be on that list in preference to some of what they've got there.

But here is a list of comic book adaptations from BoxOfficeMojo...

I didn't know there had been that many comic book flicks.

Funny, no one ever makes a list of... say... the worst romatic comedies of all time. Or the worst drama's of all time.

Judge Dredd wouldn't have been so bad if they'd nixed the casting of Rob Schneider, and had just dumped the comedic elements altogether. That was the worst part of the whole thing.
And kept the helmet on at all times.

And of course, we're missing

Judge Fear: "Gaazzzzze into the facssssse of Ffffffeeeeeeeeaarrrr..."
Judge Dredd: "Gaze into the FIST OF DREDD!"
PUNCH!

The thing is, I can remember a HORRRRRRRIBLE version of Captain America with terrible video quality, acting and Z-grade porno-movie music from when I was a teenager. It was worse than ANYTHING on that list.

That would be this version, from 1979:

They not only ditched the entire WWII aspect of the character, they even eliminated the mask, with him wearing a motorcycle helmet instead. Beyond awful!

My main beef with X3 and Spider-man 3 is how low they fell after attaining such heights, and, ironically, fail for some of the same reasons.

You can add to your 3s Superman III, which is every bit as bad as The Quest for Peace and Supergirl.

As to the list, I don't get Barbarella at all, which even the list compilers suggest really isn't of the same category at all.

Oh, Superman 3 is already on my list, believe me. :)

So is Blade 3. And Batman Forever.

Seriously, there is not one good "third in the series" comic book movie in existence. It's weird.

(Granted, number three isn't always the worst: Witness, for instance Crow 3, which--while bad--is much better than either 2 or 4. But even if they're not the worst, they're really always awful.)

I guess these were theatrical releases only, right? Otherwise, the TV versions of Captain America, that horrible Justice League movie, and the never-released original Fantastic Four movie would all certainly be up -- err, down -- there.

The most recent Punisher wasn't that bad, IMO; the original version, OTOH, was horrible drek. Its stupidity was practically Lovecraftian.

Off the top of my head, my worst three would probably be the Dolph Punisher, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Batman & Robin (probably the all-time champ -- I have never been able to watch the whole thing; I get so far and have to go do something else).

Though I haven't seen a number of the others, so they could be bad.

What did they change?

I only saw the DVD, not sure if it was the directors cut, but my wife and I found it rather enjoyable (She said she'd love to see a sequal)

Huge, enormous amounts of stuff. It's more than half an hour longer.

Did the version you saw have a subplot that included Coolio playing a guy on trial whom Matt Murdoch is trying to defend? Did it have a scene in which the Kingpin kills two of his own bodyguards?

If it had these, you saw the (infinitely better) director's cut. If it didn't, you didn't. (Those are far from the only changes, they're just the easiest to explain. Many of the others are just bits here and there that far better explain character motivations.)
