One fast way to deal with the ridiculous amount of damage many 3E sources allow for is to Cap Damage Output. At Level X you can not deal more than N damage in a single round to one foe. This scales up each level. While not as satisfying as rebalancing the entire system, it does capture the intent of how 4E reworked damage output down to saner levels.
