A while back I got to play in an adventure I later learned was a Pathfinder product called "The Bastards of Erebus," and I loved it. What was so great about it was that we were forming a Rebel Alliance against the evil Empire. The bad guys had already won, generations ago, which gave the whole setting an awesome tone.

It's all well and good to be a paragon in a just society, but when you get to play a beacon of hope in a dark and damaged world, that's seriously great stuff.

My own campaign is set in Greyhawk, and the cynical self-interest of most of the people in power as well as the constant threats lingering in the shadows make for a pretty dark world. I'm just not inspired by "preserve the status-quo" campaigns.
