How do you determine encounter distance/surprise in your game?

Sorry guys (and gals) I lost track of the thread. I have emailed it to those who asked here. Let me know if I missed anyone.

dcollins, you use the co-op on the spot? I generally don't allow a co-op on spot. Either you're quick of the eye or not, IMO. Also, I don't think my group of players (who can't all invest in hide and move silent) would be able to stand up to co-op bonuses on the bad guy side.

The best thing for defenders to do is make sure there is simply no cover or concealment aroudn the area they are defending. then it doesn't matter how good you are at hiding, you're not getting very close. Don't let the trees grow right up to the sides of the fort.
