Actually, they two are increasingly diverging...

From a gaming perspective, having two somewhat-contradictory versions of canon may actually be a boon - you get to pick and choose whatever bits you want to use for your game. And it will confuse any setting-expert players you happen to have, who then won't be able to lecture you on the way things 'should' be in the setting.

I think the FFG books are great if you can get past the dice. I would also say that you need to have a group that is proactive in the storytelling experience and doesn't just show up and expect to be entertained. If you have the "entertain me" group like I have then the FFG system puts way too much onto the GM's shoulders. Much more than any other tabletop RPG.
