Is Chris Perkins Working On A New D&D Setting?

Chris Perkins posted some tantalizing tidbits on Twitter last night… any thoughts on what it all means? He states that Forgotten Realms is not the default D&D setting, that he's working on something slated for 2016, and that there's non-Realms stuff in the works. It sounds like something related to an older setting. Could be good news for those hoping to see Eberron or some other setting brought back for 5th Edition!

Forgotten Realms regional source books already exist!

I actually don't want a single FR source book, the world is just too big to be done justice in a single book. I would prefer to see a source book for smaller regions like the Sword Coast or Thay, that would be cool.

Umm... you guys know that TSR already did this for huge swaths of the Realms right? And you can still buy them in PDF!

Even though these book are first and second edition, they have a lot of setting fluff that could be used with any D&D version (or GURPS or Savage Worlds, for that matter). Don't shy away just because there is no "5th Edition" moniker.

However the setting fluff is 130 years out of date. That's like using a book about the German Empire for an RPG in modern Germany, we just need to replace the rules for Dreyse needle-guns with rules for G36 assault rifles

I hope he's working on something new, both for the sake of injecting fresh stuff into D&D, and because this would mean Perkins is not working on the Realms.

Not a dig against Perkins, mind, I just prefer wiser hands steering that ship.

Looking forward to what's in store.

I'm not a real fan of Forgotten Realms, but I would rather have just about any other setting than Eberron be the new default setting. I really dislike robots (or whatever you want to call them) in my fantasy games. And they are a big enough part of Eberron that it wouldn't be simple to just remove them.

I've said this before, but what I would really prefer seeing is small "dungeon Like" adventures. I.e. a 16-20 page adventure that you could drop into almost any setting. I know the PF adventure paths get a lot of love, and I've bought several complete paths in the past, but I just don't want to run an "adventure" that takes 6 months to 2 years to run. I takes away a lof of what I enjoy doing as a GM. I like to paint the overall picture and have cool mini-adventures I can throw in here or there.

Warforged are not robots. They are important to Eberron because they were used in the Last War and now the Last War is over and they are without purpose. I'd like any setting other than Forgotten Realms, though I love Eberron (best setting ever!), I think they next one with stay within it's old school fantasy roots.

My ideal setup, and certainly the one I intend to do from now on, is short adventure paths each in a differently themed setting, with an accompanying player's guide. Kinda like how we did ZEITGEIST and WotBS, but smaller.

So they could have a 5-part Ravenloft AP, with a smallish downloadable player's guide. A lot of the info would be introduced in the adventures themselves.

No big hardcover bibles needed. You play an AP in Ravenloft, then you play an AP in Spelljammer, then you play an AP in Dragonlance. Paizo kinda does that thematically, but it's all in one setting. WotC has all these wonderful settings to play with.
That's a really great idea - I hope this is the plan!

This is exactly how I desire it.

This. 100%. I am not sure how others play their game, but in my experience I too prefer both running and playing adventures that can be resolved in a few sessions. Maybe other groups play more often than we do, but I can't imagine actually having a steady group long enough to finish such a path. I find small adventurers that you can tweak also more enjoyable as a DM.
