They seem a bit half and half between good and slightly cartoonish. The retro 1e MM ones are a bit meh to me. They have an iconish feel, but just cartoonish.

I'm tempted. I also think this might be a good set to dive into if you are just getting into minis. Seems to be a good selection of classic monsters.

If I was just getting into it I would pick up all the idols of the realms 2d minis sets.

For classic creatures Phandelver just released which has a great selection.

I don't think this is a good set to start with. The price increase alone means getting enough minis to play with will cost a lot.

I get minis to play with so I will be skipping this set. It is neat but so expensive and with so many minis that are more collector pieces.

Most of the miniatures in the set seem to be Then / Now pairs with older an edition version of the monster and then a new version. For example, dog-faced kobold / draconic kobold.

The Asian-style dragon is based on the 1e art. That's the gimmick for this set - half are 1e style, and half are 5e style.

I love the new models. Wouldn’t want the old ones though. Just don’t feel nostalgia for that art style.
