re: how many supers... What if something happened similar to the TV series The 4400? Say, for example, the U.N. is actively seeking out metahumans who were affected by the comet; assume they have discovered a means to detect (radiation?) in metahumans and whisk them away to some genetic research etc. plant... wipe their memories, then dump them en masse into one city (or Aliens could do it too, which could be a later segue for players to make Alien 'heroes')? 4400 metahumans... or pick any large number, preferably one with some kind of significance.

Trust me . . . I have a storyline already sketched out for something . . . similar. :]

Official vote: Bront's Origin story
While I appreciate the support, a list of Judges, who are the ultimate ones to vote, is in this thread.

Anyway, I like the oversight comitty. Perhaps we need to push the timeline of the UN actions back a bit, or simply mention a few extra things. Here's my idea for an expanded timeline:

July 2002 - Pointing to research indicating the occurance of people with enhanced abilities, Resolution 527 is put before the UN by Major Christopher Nueworth, which was written Seth Sharpman with the advice of several UN medical specialists. The resolution, termed extreme and uncalled for, is promply burried in a subcomittee for further investigation.

October 2004 - Rising Super Power Criminal incident rates come to head with the most public appearance of a super happened when a mutant, dubbed Rocky for his rock hard skin, tried to rob several banks in Switzerland, and eventualy was taken down by several tanks when he was unable to be pacified.

December 2004 - Citing events from Switzerland, the UN subcomittee investigating Resolution 527 gives it's full support and recomendation for approval.

April 2005 - Resolution 527 is passed.... (See previous timeline)

October 2005 - Under the direction of Seth Sharpton, Team Alpha HQ is established in Kansas City. and begins openly recruiting. The Team Leader is Major Nueworth, though he is simply there for recruiting purposes, and he and Seth intend to take a hands of approach once things are set in motion. Team Beta's HQ in Eddinburough, UK is still being built.

November 2005 - The first recruits for Team Alpha are accepted, and missions begin. The media quickly nicknames members of the team "Resolutes" refering to Resolution 527.

How's that work?

Why Kansas instead of a major population center like Washington D.C. or New York City, they would want to show off the team as much as possible.

You'd only really need one person to lead any given taskforce, since we have two of them, one person can lead each of the two intial taskforces. I don't particularly care who does which, but we need to at least flesh out who is leading the taskforces, and I think its easier if only one person is in command of each. Put major Nueworth in the UK and have Sharpman in the US if it matters.

I'd say that the orignal time-line of yours was fine Bront, if you push back a committee on superhuman powers into 2002 that means that powers probably showed up by 2000 or so, which isn't terribly needful. The timeline from October 2004-November 2005 is sufficient I think. I would point out though that letting the Press name the team probably wouldn't fly, they most likely would have named it themselves, something 'hip and very now', something that would look good in the papers. The team would be expected to perform, but in a large way, its sort of a publicity, the UN and member nations are seen to be doing something about a rising problem, and doing it in a cool new way, they would want to get as much play in the media as they could with it.

I propose Taskforce Guardian for the US based team
and Taskforce Paladin for the UK based team.

Just to make life easy, can someone put up a posting with links to the different origin ideas?
Happy to help . . . but would you clarify the question?

The origin ideas have been discussed and I believe Bront's World (for lack of a different name) has been accepted. The current discussion, both here and behind the scenes, are the details behind it.

Perhaps Bront's world information should be moved to the campaign and general discussion threads to continue the talks?

Accidents, threats from villians, etc. The ability to have a teleporter makes the location of the headquarters (or Inn) less significant. Also with single headquarters and a teleporter, it doesn't need a US and a UK taskforce, just individual mission taskforces.

I like the original timeline and we should continue to work from there.

However, I do like the idea of an oversight committee (Stormwatch had one, Avengers had one, etc.) in place from the U.N. It could be happening right now . . . this very second ;).

I'm partial to colors for taskforces to allow the maximum options for heroes and villian names out there. Using Paladin, Guardian, and even Resolute (which I love, by the way), takes that name away from a player or NPC.

Kansas City (which is not in Kansas btw), is better for a "not in my back yard" syndrom of a bigger city, as well as a more central area in the US and North America. Problem in Alaska? The extra few hours could be crucial, and this, being the UN, you need to worry about Canada and Mexico too at least once this becomes simply one office of several. Same with Eddinburough over London, thogh it's still in the UK, mostly for the simplicity of keeping it in an English speaking country (for now) for the players.

I like having someone setting up the second facility, but Seth Sharpman is an administrator and politician, albeit with altruistic ideals, so he's more an organizer behind the scenes than a leader of any kind in the task force. The PCs should likely never have to deal with him other than perhaps occasionaly provide reports to him so he can spin PR, file insurance claims, and settle lawsuits.

The 2002 timeline only speaks of people with abnormal abilities starting to show up, and is quickly turned down. All this means is that some scientist found something and sent it all the way up to Seth's and the Major's attention, but, with out adiquite exposure to the public, nor any solid research, it is waved off to a sub-comittee in hopes that it will eventualy be forgotten. It's more a sign of foresight of Seth and the Major, to help explain how they could move so fast in the UN juggernaught.

I think Colors work better, now that I think about it, and Keia just brought up the reason why. However, I like the teams or peoples being termed the "Resolutes" by the media. It gives the public a term that's not always the official one, and probably doesn't take away a particularly exciting name from a player.

Note, Granite got renamed Rocky in mine, so Granite can be saved for a player :)

BTW, I officaly reserve "Purple Haze" for a super hero name (Long story, will explain in a character background)

With the resolutes as a overall name for the heroes, you could have hi-res and low-res (heroes and villians) ;) :)

I love the name resolutes :) . . . Of course I loved incredibles too when I heard it used.
