Some observations:
Barbarian is the class that was designed to be the hulk. That they made druid effectively the hulk class was likely not intended. This is the thing I believe they are trying to change by removing temp hp.
Rouge is the class that is designed to be the ultimate infiltrator/scout. That they made the druid a better short time infiltrator was likely not intended. I believe this is why they change tiny.
Wild shape was a very player unfriendly ability, as the standard player resources did not contain what was needed to use it properly. That is fixed by standard stat blocks.
My guess is that the intention is for third parties to provide a load of new templates. This seem to cover the lack of mechanical flexibility many are calling for here.
I think the changes fixes my main beefs with druid. It make it easier to get into for beginners, it do not scale unpredictably based on access to material intended for DM use for other purposes. It make the class more distinct - stepping less on other classes' primary domains.
And seriously, I feel the image of the unsuspicious deer in the background suddenly turning to a long bearded man with lightning crackling around their fingers is a much cooler druid-themed start of combat than the wannabe werewolf style dominating in 5ed now.
