I was reading about archaeology, and apparently this is a REAL problem. As one archaeologist put it, there’s extensive record of one particular culture doing LOADS of trade with another particular culture. Like, US/Canada or US/Mexico level trade.

Only their trading partners’ civilization collapsed so utterly and completely, we have no idea where they were. In all the preserved documents, it was taken for granted that anyone and everyone knew where the other people lived, so its actual location OBVIOUSLY didn’t need to be officially recorded.
