In the current (6.0) Adventurer's League Player's Guide, players are allowed to choose a '+1' source for their character options, and the three current options (EEPG, SCAG, VOLO) are listed. Clearly, based on the wording of this section, a player is not required to choose an option.
It also seems obvious that, if a character is still in Tier 1, that the choice of '+1' can be changed as part of the allowed character rebuild at first tier -- this is necessary, for example, if a player wants to rebuild a Storm Sorcerer to a Bladesinger.
It finally seems obvious that, if a player has chosen a '+1' for a character, that the choice of '+1' cannot be changed outside of a tier 1 rebuild (or conceivably as part of an otherwise explicitly allowed rebuild, such as the rebuild that was allowed in the season when the EEPG was made AL-legal).
For a character whose options all come from the Player's Handbook, and thus could be said to not have chosen a '+1', has that character effectively made a choice of '+1' or not? Could such a character choose a '+1' that becomes AL-legal later, even if that character is no longer Tier 1, or is the 'no +1' option considered a choice that is binding on the character for the remainder of its life in AL? Could the same be said for a character whose non-PH options all come from adventuring, Fai Chen's, or similar sources that don't require the player to have chosen that source as a '+1' for that character, or does, say, the purchase of an EEPG scroll from Fai Chen effectively 'lock in' the EEPG as that character's +1, if the player has not already chosen one?
My guesses:
- A character that does not have an explicitly designated '+1' rules source has effectively chosen not to have a '+1', since the ALPG does not require it ("[Y]ou may also choose to use one other resource from those listed below to build your character. If you do so, please indicate your chosen additional resource on the first 'Notes' entry of your character's logsheet." (ALPG, pp.2-3, underlined emphasis mine, bold emphasis in original)
- A character that has not been assigned an additional rules source outside the PH and is 5th level or higher may not select an additional rules source unless allowed to perform a rebuild, and only as part of that rebuild.
- Taking treasures or other rules options from a source that would be allowed outside a character's '+1' rules source is legal regardless of whether the character has a defined '+1' rules source or not; such a choice does not cause that character to assume the rules source of the treasure or other rules option's rules source. (In other words, buying an EEPG scroll from Fai Chen's does not cause a character with an unassigned '+1' rules source to now select character options from the EEPG when leveling up.)
