The Entire D&D 5E SRD Is Now On FANTASY GROUNDS

If you use Fantasy Grounds to run your D&D 5E games (and many of you do), you'll be pleased to know that the newly released D&D System Reference Document is now on the VTT software in its entirety. It's available to anybody with a non-demo account, and comes automatically with any new accounts. Fantasy Grounds' Doug Davison says "We started work on converting over the new SRD content as soon as it was announced on Tuesday and quickly decided to make this a free update. This means that people can play D&D on Fantasy Grounds for as little as $10/mo for an entire group or just $4/mo for those who want to use it to help manage their campaigns for local play. (Non-subscription options are available too) The contents of the SRD are huge and we think it really shines on the Fantasy Grounds platform."

He goes on to explain: "For ease of play, we've divided the SRD content into three distinct modules - the SRD Data, SRD Bestiary and SRD Magic Items. The SRD Data contains all the reference material, races and classes for use in building and leveling characters and basic equipment, armor and weapons that can be used for characters and to aid play at the table or online. The SRD Bestiary is a module that the GM will probably choose not to share in its entirety but will allow the GM to quickly build encounters as they prep their session or on the fly. Since there are no images in the SRD, we've linked as many of these as possible to the top-down style tokens we licensed a year or so ago. Again, these are all included in the module for free. Finally, the magic items are presented as magic item templates from the SRD but are forged with existing equipment to use items which are usable by characters. In addition, the GM will be able to combine multiple effects with equipment to crank out some really unique items or item sets.

In addition to this, we continue to sell fully licensed modules for those people who want all of the content, the images and the extra bells and whistles we've added to those products. In fact, we just started work on the next big release from Wizards of the Coast. I think it's going to be a big hit with the D&D community."

Fantasy Grounds is the official licensed virtual tabletop software for D&D 5th Edition. Find it here.

I have fantasy grounds but I have yet to get into it. The barrier to entry seems large to me. Nothing seems to be very intuitive out of the box (comparing to roll20 which is what I use currently) I logged in to try out with the SRD But there is no character builder. I still have to adjust a lot by hand, double checking feats or race/class abilities and manually changing initiative and AC. No way to just equip gear (again at least intuitively). I hope its just something I need to read up on because as it stands now, Its just easier to use roll20; drag and drop what I want into the area and if we have to do things manually anyway its easier to read some of the excel sheets up there.

Don't get me wrong I would love to be using Fantasy grounds, the pictures I have seen once its working seem awesome hence why I bought it. I just have an issue with how non user friendly it seems upon first opening it up.

Hey DocSun, be sure to check out the wiki on building characters.
http://www.fantasygrounds.com/wiki/index.php/5E_Character_Sheet

Fantasy Ground's focus is not on providing a character builder (although it has some of those features), but in unlocking a very automated and easy to use combat system and play system once the characters are built. Manually adjusting your armor class is the main area that you will need to do after you add your armor and shield to your inventory. Weapons should automatically set up your attack macros/actions and most spells will as well. You can use the simple modifiers and effects systems manually for abilities that don't automatically configure themselves, but once you become more fluent in the software you can normally set these up as powers as well.

Here are some videos on the character building options:

It's a bit easier out of the box now because of the included SRD content.

There is a tutorial table run, I think every other Monday, that helps people through character creation and basic combat tutorial etc.

You can see it when its posted on the Moonsea Pub on Facebook.

So I keep looking at this stuff, and saying "tomorrow". Is the Ultimate License a one-time deal, or do I need to re-subscribe on an annual basis or something? (I know I need to buy the adventure packs separately).
Just as a note if you don't need the program now, they tend to do sales in sync with the steam platform sales. I think at this point the next one won't be until june or so, but it's a good bit of savings if you're on the fence.
