"At the higher levels though, any Mage who dies to a Monk without extreme luck on the side of the Monk was not much of a Mage after all..."

Nonsense. High level villains are frequently mages and many of these have died at the hands of a monk character.

Well, the presumption people make in mage v. whatever... is the presumption of a fair fight.

A wizard does not have all of his protective spells cast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A monk that manages to sneak up next to an unsuspecting wizard (hide/move silently) or uses diplomacy to get in close enough to "parlay" and then just attacks.

The false dichotomy of Brilliant Mage/Idiot Everyone Else is just failsauce.

Does it really take such a great investment of resources?

Actually, yes it does.

It requires expenditure of feats, wealth, spell slots, and all the rest.

You'll present some backdoor solution, but that's not really what's at issue here.

Will a specifically built wizard be able to overcome a specific challenge?

Certainly.

Will the majority of wizards be able to overcome that challenge? No.
