Bolo gratefully accepts the gift. She learns the name of the boy and invites him through friendly gesture, to come visit them in Southroad Fair when he is old enough.

Sannit learns the names of the elder and the boldest seeming warriors. Does he see any weapons here worth trading for?

Turtle sees the phoenix feather and immediately wonders what it would taste like, getting a quick mental reproach from Bolo. Fine, he won't eat the feather. He wanders off to see if there are any more leftovers he can have.

After they camp for the night Bolo will call the Seekers together to link and inspect the phoenix feather to attempt to determine its abilities.

Merin and Tor enjoy both the meal, and the show, and pay close attention to the story. Merin is glad to see that Bolo has received a gift from the Elder; it means that the Seekers have gained new friends among these peoples. Merin wonders if Raven might know the name of this tribe, and possibly how to speak their language. He files that away in his head, for the next time he finds himself in town.

When the party has camped, Merin will attempt to create a crude sketch of the Elder Rhein, which he plans to show to Raven.

GM: It is conveyed as the Seekers pack their animals for departure that the Rheini camp was only temporary and that the clan was planning on traveling farther south due to some troubles to the north. With a distinct interest in the lacquering process, the clan makes plans to head to Southroad Fair in hopes of good trade.

The boy's name is Gato Sortudo.

GM: The elder is called Passaro Chamando. The warriors all attempt to identify themselves, as well. All the names seem descriptive of animals. While the Rheini show proficiency in making leather armor, their weapons are rudimentary, being made of bone and stone.

GM: Bolo sends the mental image of a spent coal from the fire at Turtles linked inquiry, which he finds rather tasteless an uninteresting.

GM: The Phoenix Feather protects the bearer from heat and can be used to generate fire. Unlike simpler nodal items of way , the feather is not consumed if used to generate fire but remains dormant for day.

GM: Merin is improving in his skill at drawing and cartography, both of which should prove helpful.

Day 43: Hunting for the Haunted Tree, Day 8

Having traveled for maybe a little over an hour after departing company with the Rheini, the Seekers made camp for the night. The night being uneventful.

By midday the following day, a stick scarecrow is spotted, strung between two trees. Not much is thought about it as the party breaks for lunch. By late afternoon when camp is made many of the decorations are noted, now being adorned with the bones of various animals and men. The intent is obviously to convey fear and malevolence. No game had been spotted for several hours.

Tor says,

"It seems we're on the right track. But the makers of this scarecrow have erred in one regard; I am NOT scared, and they more they adorn the scarecrow, the more I want to go in that direction. What say the rest of you?"

Sannit looks over the scarecrows and says, "Before we go, let's leave our own token attached to the scarecrow. That way we will know if we came this way if there is more than one of them." He takes a small strip of cloth and paints an 'S' onto it for Seekers and then attaches it to the scarecrow in a non-conspicuous place.

Looking around in caution Bolo says, "Before we move on we should link and do a search for people in case this path is being watched. I am aware that any way users might be able to sense it, but that is a good thing. If they like to deal in fear, let them fear us."

Turtle sniffs the scarecrow and can sense the determination in Bolo, but he is not so sure. Humans are like any animals, and they mark territory for a reason.

During their nightly meditation before bed, Bolo will focus on the phoenix feather, attempting to decipher how it conveys its abilities. If she can discover how to duplicate it, she can make one for all the Seekers.

OOC: what skill would that be under?

OOC: To better clarify, the scarecrows, and there are many, are tied up in the trees and suspended above the ground so that even Tor could walk under them without bumping one. They are free to blow in the breeze and make creaking and clanking noises, presumably to add to their intended effect.

GM: Before any of these desired tasks can be completed, Turtle, whose sense of smell is 4 times that of a person, and Myth, whose hearing is 4 times, both trigger their respective links as to somethings moving toward the area. This is at a greater distance than anyone can sense anything, even linked.

As to the nature of all characters, I will take it for granted that Bolo and Merin alert all others.

State Intentions.

Merin says, "We've got company coming, and it will arrive soon."

Tor draws sword and shield, putting his back to a large tree, facing the direction of the possible threat. He does not neglect to scan upwards, since the scarecrows were hung so high.

Merin tells Myth to hide, as he does the same, crouching behind a bush.

Both Merin and Tor intend to attack anyone who approaches in an aggressive manner, unless there is a powerful or blatant reason not to.

Sannit will take up a position with his spear, facing the direction of what is approaching. He steadies his breathing and listens as much as watches for any sound of danger, including behind him.

Bolo takes up a position behind him with an arrow nocked but not drawn on her bow. She does a thorough search of the tree limbs, wanting nothing to drop on her this time.

Turtle is next to her, still sniffing and listening to determine what is coming.
