Why that equation? I never claimed them to be equal. But thanks to Marvel, multiverses are quite big in popculture right now, so D&D has to bring in their own. I personally don't have any interest in multiverses of any kind so it’s another negative point for me.
Because D&D has always had a multiverse (since 1e), but the D&D multiverse is about multiple planes of reality (Prime, Inner, Outer, etc.) not alternate realities (earth 56, etc.). So a D&D multiverse adventure is essentially a planescape adventure, not a marvel or dc alternate reality hopping affair

Which isn't to say they haven't flirted with alternate primes. Tasha's included a spell specifically for crossing over to alternate primes, for instance.

Akshully, D& flash had an Everything, Everywhere, All at Once style multiverse, using the word miltiverse even, since at least 1978 when the PHB laid out thst concept.

Granted, they were still cripping it from groovy edgy Marvel cpmics in 1978, but what are ya gonna do? The more things change.

Thanks for explaining what I already know, again, I never claimed them to be functional same or even similar. But it is not a coincidence that wotc publish multiverse related content right now, its thanks to Marvels grip on pop culture. Marketing doesnt care that D&D multiverse means something different, slap it on the ads and it will sell better, because its the current craze.

The D&D multiverse has had parallel prime material planes since the 1st edition DMG. Hence the pages on crossing over with Gamma World and Boot Hill. There is all this talk about Tolkien and Howard, but Moorcock was a huge influence, these days largely forgotten.

Yes it has, but the “multiverse” of D&D has always been the multiple planes of reality of the standard cosmos. The alternate realities of the Prime has waxed and waned over the years IME
