What did you buy?

Which subscription did you choose?

Also having to contact them to prevent automatic drafts for renewals as the only option to cancel, otherwise as the end of any subscription length you are automatically charged again.
I don't think that's accurate. When I signed up, I recall that was given the option for automatic renewal (which I selected, for the record), but I could have chosen not to renew my subscription automatically.

Maybe something is not exactly matching up with the sign-up instructions then....

Answer

"Click the box to state you have read the below agreement."

Answer

By checking the box (when making a D&D Insider order) and providing your credit or debit card billing information, you agree that your product subscription will automatically renew for successive renewal terms, and you expressly authorize and permit Digital River, Inc. (“DR”) to bill each product subscription renewal fee to the credit or debit card you have provided, until you cancel the automatic renewal and billing of your product subscription or DR discontinues the automatic renewal and billing option.

Answer

To stop auto-renew, you will need to fill out a form to contact our billing specialists.

You may be right (I can't go back to check it now). I might have mentally parsed it as "Click the box if you want to automatically renew your subscription" or words to that effect.

In my defence, I signed up shortly after I woke up, and before my first cup of coffee for the day. :p

No defense needed. Many people just click through the "I accept" type boxes without ever reading them. But now that you see what can happen, you may wish to check the 3rd link about stopping the auto-renew feature if you do not want to risk it prior to the end of your subscription.

Jury is out on how long it will take to get your confirmation e-mail from the CSR team depending on how much time it takes them to contact "DR" and tell them to cancel it.

Many people hope for a button that can cancel it without CSR intervention, or an option to turn-on the auto-renew rather than no option to turn it off when subscribing.

WotC will probably let people know more about that as time progresses.

Either way enjoy your subscription. Hope the tools provided serve your needs.

Wow. That's a scary EULA. Memo to WotC: I did not sign up for this service immediately, but once things were up and running (I imagined 3-6 months from now) I was planning on doing so. Unless there is opt-out of auto subscriptions, I'll never buy it, period.

That wasn't the EULA, just the "auto-renewal terms and conditions" that you must accept. (Even if you don't want to set up automatic drafts for future renewals.)

Here is the EULA for DDI. Member Terms of Service

Yea, I actually wanted to choose to have no automatic renewal, and thought that the box was for such. Imagine my surprise when it was not an option.

However, since I chose to not save my credit card details and since my card expires well before the subscription ends, I am unsure how they will auto renew me at the end of the 12 months.

I am not worried about this little issue at all - although I think for WoTC's own benefit they should get it sorted out so that people can choose to not auto renew.

I didn't have the time when I initially answered the poll, so here's my clarification for voting "What are you, crazy? Why would I waste my money?" — I may still subscribe in the future.

The reason I held off for now is that WotC has a very bad track record with electronic services (though in light of the tragedy, I can certainly understand why the DDI didn't launch as scheduled and am sympathetic to that).

I'm basically going to wait it our a bit, and see if the new Digital Technology Projects can get things back on track in such a way that I feel it prudent to give them money for their efforts.

Hopefully it will not then cause it to go as fraudulent payment and go on your credit record, or worse.

I picked the "What are you crazy" option. We're still running the Shackled City AP in 3.5e and will be for a while. When we (most probably) change over to 4e I'll probably end up getting a subscription, probably a yearly one. It should be worth it for the price of Dungeon alone (and that's mainly all I'd be interested in).
