I've been doing a lot of work to change many of the feats so that any numbers are changed to be the character's Proficiency bonus. For the next campaign I'm also going to change Durable and Tough to put them into one feat with the following change. Durable - You gain +2 hit points each level. - When you roll your hit dice to heal, you add your Proficiency Bonus to the roll (for each die).

In my game, the players got their hands on a bag of beans and not knowing what it did, they planted one. Out pops a pyramid. I wanted to make them tackling this pyramid to be a memorable and epic event. So I turned to Tamochan in the book and started them on it. After one session I knew I had to completely rewrite nearly all the encounters. Honestly it is so random that it makes almost no...

...ironmental affect), the Plot Thickens [11] (add minor detail to story, upgrade miss to a hit or hit to critical, downgrade critical to hit or hit to miss), A Plot within a Plot [15 points] (add major detail to story). Unused Plot Points at the end of a session may be traded in for XP (1 Plot Point = 250XP). We use different XP tables, slower rate of leveling. When deeds of true heroism are called for and nothing short of a cinematic performance will do, it is time to draw upon hero points. What are hero points? In short, they are acquired points that your PC can spend for a variety of purposes to gain abilities that affect game play. Some of these effects are temporary in duration, such as Round and Encounter Abilities, while other abilities are Permanent in effect. I want my players to be active participants in our campaign site. I also want to encourage them to perform Heroic Deeds. Hero Points are a way to do both. We use poker chips to track Hero Points at the table (the same as phantomK9), and these have been a smashing success for us. The players are more willing to take dramatic risks in-game, and I'm very proud to say they are doing a spectacular job of participating in the campaign site. It's a win/win. I already have more than enough exposure to The Angry DM, and though he does sometimes have good points, I really dislike his "angry" schtick. Different strokes. I disagree with penalizing players by deducting points for being late to the game session. That strikes me as being excessively and unnecessarily draconic.

Thanks for the replies everyone- especially Blue for bringing up all the various things that might interact with this, some of which I hadn't considered. I don't know if I'll be using it or not yet. I'll have to think about it some more and possibly make some adjustments (and obviously discuss it with my players). Sent from my XT1080 using EN World mobile app Edit: phantomK9 that sounds interesting. I might try to somehow incorporate something like that in instead.

  • 02:18 AM - Chaosmancer quoted phantomK9 in post Fixing the terrible Weapon Master feat
I've always been of the opinion since 5e came out that if a feat provides some kind of numerical bonus, then that bonus should be tied to your character's Proficiency bonus. To that end I've change several of the feats to do this. Weapon Master is one where I plan to do this as well and give + Prof bonus to damage. But I would keep to only one weapon (or possibly two related weapons). I, personally, haven't found 4 weapons to be too much, since usually my players only use one or two weapons ever. The Barbarian I took this on never used anything other than a longsword and javelins, I honestly never remembered what the other two were that I had picked. (Think one was Battleaxes, since he'd had some contact with a Dwarven Clan). Not sure if this changes your decision, just pointed out that in terms of power, it was effectively the same with the way our tables tend to use weapons.

Once you defeat animated armor, doesn't the magic in it dispel? Which is part of the fun of D&D ... making it your own game. :) Yea, the rule of fun! So the PC's had to retreat twice before they finally defeated the animated armors. Then they wanted to loot the pieces and have plate armor. I said, "sure." After all, I knew I could do something with it at a later date (hence this thread). And, why say "No" when I can say "Yes" and have fun with it later :) In a high squeaky voice that sounds like metal on metal: "Save us, brothers, we've been kidnapped!" This is awesome! I will have to do more than this, but this is going to be part of it!

Once you defeat animated armor, doesn't the magic in it dispel? We know a dispel magic can knock it out for a minute but I always assumed defeating it was effectively hacking it to pieces/breaking it apart. Whether defeating the armor destroys it is a DM call, the rules are silent. Which is part of the fun of D&D ... making it your own game. :)

As a fan of Critical Role....I have the exact opposite problem from the original poster.... NOT A SINGLE ONE OF MY PLAYERS watches any of them, nothing. I've mentioned to them how much fun they are (especially Critical Role) and I'm met with blank stares and questions like, "Why would I want to watch someone else play D&D?". I wouldn't sweat it too much, it means you can borrow ideas from the show and they'll be completely new to your players.

  • 08:53 PM - mellored quoted phantomK9 in post Fixing the Fighter - Making room for the warlord, ranger, barbarian, rogue, and more.
My belief is that all fighters should, at 2nd level get Maneuvers and Superiority Dice (just 2 d6 to start with) and then as they level, they should have a choice of either an ASI at 6th and 14th levels, or an additional Maneuver and Superiority Die. The Battle Master would of course gain more Maneuvers, more Superiority Dice and of course larger Superiority Dice as it gains levels, basically it should be the Maneuver/Superiority Dice focus variant from the core Fighter functionality.IMO using a dice pool prevents a simple fighter. Where as using fighting style gives you flexibility for things like +2 to hit with bows, or +1 AC, as well as dice. In addition to other maneuvers.

Then you should check out Ed Greenwood Presents: Elminster's Forgotten Realms. It was put out a little bit before 5e became a thing and created by Ed Greenwood himself (I think in response to what they did to his world in 4e). Is is 100% fluff, no rules at all. It is filled with exactly the thing you are looking for. I'd like to second that. It really is a great book. I read into it every time I need inspiration for a game, even a non-FR game. Greenwood really manages to make the day-to-day life in a fantasy world come to life.

That is exactly what I was thinking when he was describing it. Yeah, yeah, sure sure, Van Helsing, blah, blah.....Give me a WITCHER! Damn whippersnappers, in my day we had Van Healing and we liked it! Besides from what I hear about the witcher, to accurately protray it would require far more nudity then the average D&D game has ;p

  • 10:42 PM - cbwjm quoted phantomK9 in post Unearthed Arcana October 2017: Fiendish Options
Don't really hate this one, but it just seems like giving Tieflings that many subraces is kind of pointless and overkill when compared to other races, especially their opposite the Assimar. I think that Volo's Guide did the Assimar really well, and they are not all specifically aligned with some specific higher being but rather a specific style or dare say role. Tieflings should be done very similarly, and in fact I really enjoyed what was done with them in Sword Coast Guide, a few options, but not overwhelming. Now, I think that the options in SCG can be combined with those in this UA to really allow for complete customization, but then at that point, why not just say, "choose 1 here, choose 2 there, etc". As for the rest of it, looks good, but mostly just for DMs. Not sure if it is something I would personally use, but seems fairly cool. I'd actually quite like the ability to choose (or randomly roll) abilities for a tiefling to represent that they have something in their bloodline but not...

  • 08:36 PM - Dax Doomslayer quoted phantomK9 in post Eldritch Knight
Having played an Eldritch Knight to level 20, I think you are on the right path to a fun and effective character. Mine was a Human who used a shield and long sword. As I was the only fighter (even armor wearing) character in the group I focused heavily on defense, but I sometimes wish I had gone with focusing on two-handed weapons and Great Weapon Master. Early on I picked up the Heavy Armor Master feat which really upped my tanking. I also only picked up spells that buffed me or gave me battlefield movement and then the odd ranged spell, here and there. Being limited to just Abjuration and Evocation was the worst part of the class as it really limited the spells you could get. Once you are able to pick up Haste however, the game changes significantly. This actually sounds like my exact approach. Pick up Great Weapon Master, add Heavy Armor, pick buff and movement spells (Expeditious Retreat; Longstrider; Misty Step, Jump was a good one too etc) and maybe fireball and that's about it. That...

  • 03:45 PM - iserith quoted phantomK9 in post Need Some Help on Druid Build
My experience from playing with someone who ran a high level druid and from DMing for a few druids.... Shapechange is nice but at high levels your best option is almost always going to be one of your spells. At high levels Shapechange ends up being one of those abilities of "nice to have" but the type of animal you can turn into tends to not be as effective, at least until you can start turning into much more powerful elementals which wont be until a few more levels. If you have already chosen Circle of the Moon, fine, but tanking really won't be your strong suit because the animals you turn into will not have a very high AC (absent some magic items that transform with you), perhaps a good amount of hit points, but in general low AC. Really what Shapechange is good for is more of utility animals. A small cat to stealthily get into or out of places. A bird for fast flight, a giant eagle to carry a party member or two quickly over long distance (if not using a spell). These are were higher l...

  • 08:23 PM - Yunru quoted phantomK9 in post A Barbarian, A Ranger and a designer walk into a bar
In truth, trading out gaining exhaustion for spending Hit Dice might actually work out to be about the same since both Exhaustion and Hit Dice only come back upon a long rest anyway. Exhaustion you only recover one level per long rest, whereas you regain up to half your maximum hit dice.

  • 10:57 PM - doctorbadwolf quoted phantomK9 in post Unearthed Arcana: Feats for Races
Far too many of these go back to the well of "gain double proficiency bonus if already proficient", but the ones that don't go to that well are for more interesting. Not sure if some of these could be over power or not, Dwarf Rogue with Dwarf Resilience seems like a fun combo. Some of these listed seem like they can easily be swapped out for some of the racial abilities a race gets at character creation if you want to make a variant of that race. IMO, Dragonborn should now start with one of; Breath Weapon, Wings, and Dragonfear, and can use a feat to gain the others. Anyway, I mostly like these. Critter Friend, and feats like it, imo, should spell out capabilities, rather than giving spells. Drow High Magic obv should have spells, but Critter Friend seems like something that should just be a feature. The flavor doesn't feel like a spell, so why make it possible for the gnome to be counterspelled or anti-magiced?
  • 10:13 PM - Mercule quoted phantomK9 in post Unearthed Arcana: Feats for Races
My mind looks at that and immediately reads it as HVV (Human Vampire Virus), too much Shadowrun in my youth. I believe it should actually be HMHVV (Human Meta-Human Vampiric Virus). Because it also makes stuff like banshees (vampire elves) and wendigo (trolls, I think).
