Iconic Monster Use - The Displacer Beast

I'm very curious about how often iconic D&D monsters actually get used. IMO, iconic monsters should be used fairly often, and I have a feeling that many of them are not seeing much air time. So, I'm creating a series of polls about iconic monsters and how often they see use.

As a DM, in the past, how many encounters have you created or played or used using an Displacer Beast? As a Player, how often have you encountered a Displacer Beast?

((Sorry for the wordy question, but I'm trying to keep the pedantry to a minimum))

BTW: you might want to edit your original post, which mentions Aboleths where it should be Displacer Beasts. Cut and paste error?

I don't think I've ever faced or used a displacer beast in my play time. Been playing some form of DnD since I was 10, so in my 13 years I can't recall any memorable encounters with the creatures.

I can't say why my DMs have never really used them, but when I run games I've never found a place for them in my ecologies. But that's probably more a personal problem than anything else, since I have a difficult time visualizing hundreds of variant monster species all living cohesively within a relatively small environment.

I don't use it much but in over 25 years of gaming have used it more then 16 times.

In my very first combat I was killed in the first round by a displacer beast. As a DM, I end up using them as an encounter in about half the campaigns I run.

Yeah, this can be very misleading. I've been gaming for almost 30 years and have certainly lost track of how many times I've used the Displacer Beast (I only know the Aboleth answer because I've never used or encountered one).

Someone who has been playing for a year and has used them 7 times isn't the same as if I had used them only 7 times.

I've used cloaks of displacement which are made from displacer beast skins, but never an actual beast.

I vaguely justified one once; never again.

I dislike most ethereal and extra-planar creatures as presented in D&D.
