Qalabash had been uncharacteristically silent after the arrival of the archer and Helerion's chosen. Surely he wasn't intimidated by the pair but when they turned away for a semi-private discussion the older man seemed relieved.

"I do not believe I was present on the night you refer to, Charity, though I was numerous nights after and can indeed attest to the decided lack of, hmm... presence.

Qalabash noticed Charity's odd behavior and quickly latched onto Aschwin's proposal to help the man rekindle the camaraderie.

"A story, comedic? I am certain that I could scrape the ol' bone-box and come up with something that matches your prerequisites."

Melisande, Paladin

Melisande had not met Kutholiam before, but the name was familiar. She nodded as the soldier expressed inability to fully comprehend the rites or magic happenings. She was not the brightest of people either.

She did look surprised when Aradra wanted to explain what he had experienced with some discretion and privacy. “I see. Perhaps that would be best. I appreciate your thoughtfulness.”

“Would a private room here be acceptable, or shall we go to the Chapter House of Helerion?”

Aradra pauses for a second, considering the question, before saying "A private room back in the back should be fine. Those rooms block a surprising amount of sound. Most likely they have treated to do such that, now that I think about it. Also, I have never actually had food here. I always seem to leave just before eating. "

Aradra stood up, grabbing his half finished drink and draining it, and looked over at Grog "Grog! We are taking one of the private rooms. Can I get an ale, and order of the frog legs as well?"

He looked at Melisande to see if she had another order to place before escorting her to one of the smaller back rooms.

Melisande ordered some beef stew with a side of cheese and bread as Grog jabbed a meaty finger at a barmaid to take care of them. With orders placed and an escort to show them which private room to use, the female paladin accompanied the archer.

Once inside she sat at the table, taking one of the six chairs around it.

“Okay, we are alone now. Again I can appreciate your candor and discretion.”

Aradra Longstrider

Aradra takes one of the chairs, nodding at Melisande's words. "I was a solider for Rorn before I arrived in Venza. I know how important secrets are to organizations."

He looks at his hands for a few seconds, trying to figure out where to start. Knowing that he was not going to be able to make a good story out of it, Aradra decided to stick to just what happened at the Cathedral and the siege of the keep.

"Everything seemed fine. We were seated in the cathedral, which took some time before the actual ceremony started. The Ceremony was long, and half of it was in Celestial. I could not even tell you what was said. Well, Alton Allbright, the guest of honor, was speaking something, when one of the guests stood up, and said that something felt wrong. Then, a giant crash as flying demons flew though the windows above. A giant blob of green demons flooded out the back of the cathedral, and Alton...transformed into a demon himself. I think the total count was..." Aradra pauses, leans back in his chair, and counting with his fingers " 1 Glaberzu, 4 Succubi, 4 Klavakus, 6 Vrocks, and an unknown count of Dregs. Mind you, the only reason I know what they were was because I asked Kutholiam before returning to Venza. A quick battle in the hall turned into our favor, and not long after the demons were dead. That is when we found out that the keep itself had fallen."

Aradra pauses as food is brought in, smiling at Marla as she brought in their food. He waits until Marla left before continuing. "The high general there wanted to march up and capture it. One of the guests said that it was a bad idea, and I agreed. The general ignored our advice, but it caught the attention of Kutholiam. He and the wizards believed something happened to the Shields defenses, and so wanted a small strike team to go and investigate."

At this point, Aradra pauses. He looks up questioningly at Melisande, and asks "Any questions so far?"

Melisande had listened without interrupting, her face becoming stern as she heard of the events going awry at the Cathedral and Allbright's betrayal. It was bad news, but after hearing that the paladins and guests took care of the problem, she nodded that things had been handled well enough.

The disagreement about how to handle the storming of the take citadel raised and eyebrow. "Really? So you and these other adventurers that were in attendance as guest became this strike force while the General kept the rest occupied by trying to storm the fallen keep?"

She was not much of a tactician herself when it came down to it. Melisande and others like her relied on the strength of their faith, not tricks of war. But she was also not fool either and did not comment. She was not there and would not second guess the situation.

"Please, continue."

"Correct. The battle the general was going to face was a tactical nightmare. First, most of the demons that were there had the ability to fly, while the army did not. Also, it was unknown how many demons there actually where. Finally, the fort they were going to siege was extremely old, and one of the best protected areas on E'n. With no siege equipment, there needed to be a different way than to charge straight in."

Aradra paused long enough to take a small swig of his ale before continuing.

"Kutholiam and some of the wizards in attendance believed that something may have happened to Mendikarr's Shield, and the Demonscope that generates the Shield. From what the wizards told me afterwards, it's the shield that protects us from the gate to the Abyss. So, our mission was to go in, find out what happened to Demonscope, and repair it if necessary. We sneaked in via a passage way that connected the grand cathedral to an old storage facility inside the fort. We ran into some more demons along the way, and one of our team seemed to have died before Kutholiam brought him back. However, we finally got into the fort . We flew around the outside of the fort, out of sight of the other demons that were still inside the fort, and manged to get inside the main hall of the fort. I think that is around the time the General's army arrived, so they did cause a slight diversion, although I don't think it was intentional."

"We had one little skirmish on the stairs as we tried to descend to where the Demonscope was, but thankfully the Demonscope's power kicked on when we were supposed to fight another set, and made the demons literally disappear. Once we got inside, Kutholiam and the wizard tried to get the Demonscope only while the rest of us stood around hoplessly, trying to make sure the Balor demon trapped inside did not escape. 3 of the wizards figured out that the relic's holding the Balor back were not in the proper sequence. One that sequence was reset, the shield came on in full force." Aradra instinctively blinks, remembering how bright that light was when the Demonscope's power kicked back on.

"From what I heard after words, apparently some of the paladins were mind controlled, and they were used to swap the relics on the on the Demonscope, therefore weakening it and allowing some demon's to go through the gate. Based on how quickly we go in there though, we were able to save the Demonscope from getting destroyed. If we had not followed Kutholiam's advice, we would not be speaking right now."

Given a short lull in conversation, Charity holds her hands between an overhead light and the table. Contorting them just so, the shadow falling from them appears as a bird. She nonchalantly shifts between several other animals, quietly passing the time.

~ In a private room ~

Melisande listened on with rapt attention as she heard how close they had come to the destruction of the realm by ravaging demons. She had drained the goblet of wine and poured another from the carafe Marla had brought earlier.

“Well, that is very disconcerting that the Order was effectively infiltrated to do evil’s bidding unwittingly. The Order certainly owes you and your companions a debt of gratitude for the undertaking alone.”

“I also thank you again for not wanting to mention such things in the public taproom. While it would be understandable with explanation, someone overhearing such things would twist the details to just ruin the reputations of those who only succumbed to an evil magical influence and not because they made the wrong choices.”

The female paladin now understood why she had not been called to undertake the quest. The Order was well represented already, but it was outside assistance that was needed. She would not have been as useful if she had been there.
