Wizard Confusion

On p.158 of the PHB it says, under Spellbook-Daily and Utility Spells: "After an extended rest, you can prepare a number of daily and utility spells according to what you can cast per day for your level."

What is that supposed to mean?

Say I have a 5th-level Wizard. She'll have two Level 1 Daily, two Level 5 Daily, and two Level 2 Utility spells in her spellbook.

So how many of those can she cast in a given day? I can't find anything that says "what you can cast per day for your level".

I'm guessing that they mean I should refer to the "Total Powers Known" column of the "Character Advancement" table on p.29. But it's not clear that is the case at all.

If that is the case, then my Wizard can only prepare two of the four Daily and one of the two Utility spells she knows?

You got it. That's exactly how it works. And you can't ready the same spell twice. And you can't ready spells higher than the max you got.

So at level 6, you got levels 5,1 for daily attack spells, and level 6,2 for utilities. You can prepare a level 5 and a level 1 spell, or both level 1 spells, but you can't prepare both level 5 spells. The same idea goes for utilities.

It means that the Wizard picks one of each set of spells for today's spells.

Right. The Wizard prepares one of the two known Level 1 Dailies, one of the two known level 2 Utilities, and one of the two known Level 5 Dailies.

According to customer support, the Wizard cannot mix and match. He cannot, for example, prepare one of his Level 1 Dailies in the Level 1 slot and one of his Level 1 Dailies in the Level 5 slot (or vice versa).

Where is this in the PHB? I know I'm going to have problems with players being as confused as me when I'm DM.

I do not think you can prepare both level 1 spells.

I think customer service stated that this was not allowed (and I suspect it will be clarified in errata later on).

FFS. You are totally conflicting.

When is the next errata update?

Yup, that's what happens when you ask popular opinions :)

Rule it one way or the other, and when/if the errata comes out fix the ruling if necessary. No, it's not perfect, but it's as good as we've got. Wizards are the exception to the normal rule of "one power per level that you qualify for" and so are going to need some errata if they want to be 100% clear.

Might be right on that, but I prefer to keep things simple in case someone decides to make sleep one of their '5th level spell' slot spells

Doh, confusing... sorry if these are stupid questions... I find the new system so much more confusing compared to the previous version.

So at level nine, I could have already 'learnt' a level 1 daily (say sleep), a level 5 daily (say fireball) and a level 9 daily (say icestorm). In that case, my understanding is that I can cast each of these once, per day.

What if I had chosen to use my level 9 daily slot to learn a different level 5 daily (say stinking cloud) instead of a level 9 spell? So I had learn: sleep, fireball, and stinking cloud and have these in my spellbook.

Am I able to cast fireball twice daily in this case?
