"Holding the Charge"

But, After more thought...

I still agree with the general idea of my previous ruling, but now want to change some small deails to make it better for pcs:

a) The discharge of the energy (of a 'held charge') cannot happen accidentally, but must be a puposeful discharge by the caster/wand-wielder,

b) Loss of consciousness of the caster erases any charges that are being held, (this ruling negates most of the advantage sorceres have over wizards in this regard) and

c) If a held charge is not used or otherwise lost before the caster next casts a spell or prepares spells for the day, then the held charge is lost as soon as the next casting begins or the first new spell is memorized.

These three rulings also apply to a held charge from a wand or other device.

Personally, I rule that any such spell held "in hand" is dissipated harmlessly when the caster loses consciousness for any reason.

On an unrelated note, I also rule that spells with a duration of permanent actually have a duration equal to (caster level squared) weeks. Otherwise, we'd eventually see the universe lit up like a Christmas tree with continual light spells.

Thanks, Ashtagon! Good idea about the loss of consciousness!

Sorry, I can't agree with your treatment of permanent spells. As a player, I think Continual Light is just TOO cool to mess with! Plus... I just LIKE Christmas trees! hehehe

How do you rule for spells that have had Permanency applied to them? Does that change things?

(agree with your entire 'reiteration' post)

Regarding permanency, I allow that to be truly permanent, barring dispels and the like. I just want to avoid the industrial revolution that would be inevitable if every low-level caster were to churn out continual lights and selling them for fun and profit. permanency is a high-level spell, and so it will be sufficiently rare that it would cause the same issues.
