There it is, black and white, clear as crystal!

I love this for a few reasons:

1. It is a silly and fun item, useful in combat, but mostly just silly and fun.
2. It shows us how pets might, and likely will, work! Its elegantly simple.
3. It contains RaNdOmNeSs! I feared 4e would do away with the crazy random items. This seems to be a nice combo of fun random results and no real bad consequences from the randomness. Brilliant!

Makes me hopeful for a deck of many things or rod of wonder that is still crazy cool and random, but less campaign destroying.

THOUGHTS?!!

Thoughts? I want the Rod of Lordly Might. Yesss... It gives hope that a lot of the magic items that I thought were "off limits" in 4E may not be.

I hope this has equipment, too. 4E so far is SEVERELY lacking in adventurer's equipment. Right now, we're using Goods & Gear for equipment that doesn't rely on stats. Hey Kenzer! Hook us up with a new Goods & Gear for 4E! :D

They had a mundane weapon in the preview, so hopefully they have "normal" equipment.

They have also promised alchemical items.

That bag had more charecter then a lot of the PHB items (which where pretty dry). I hope to see more of the same.

So, I am trying to decipher this, since I am still unfamiliar with 4e nomenclature. The bag is not usable by low level characters, right? You have to be somewhere close to 8th level to use it. For me, that sort of defeats the purpose of a Bag of Tricks. I give it to low level characters to aid them. That's been their use in my campaigns since AD&D 1e. I don't know, it doesn't seem as useful as previous versions of the magic item. Maybe it is just me.

No, the item level is just an estimate of its usefulness. Anyone can use it, but the 8th level minion might be unbalancing at level 1. It could show up in treasure as early as level 4. By level 8, it's a bog-standard item.

Right, the only "hard rule" affect an item's level has is that you must be that level or higher to create one yourself.

The item level is basically a continutation of the idea from 3E's Magic Item Compendium.

The item level just refers to the minimum level needed to actually CREATE it. This is also the level at which the PCs can probably buy said item if they were interested. Basically, the level at which it could be considered a "standard" item.

However, it CAN be a treasure from as early as level 4. (Just like how encounters can be up to 4 levels higher than the party without risking a TPK)
