What Do Gamers Eat?

What Foods Do You Eat While Gaming

Every time we get together for a gaming session, we have food. Lots of it, and it is seldom healthy. Plus, everyone at our table loves food, loves to cook, and loves to try new things...so the menu changes from week to week.

What foods do you typically eat at your game session? Check all that apply. Do you have a "signature dish" that you like to prepare for your gaming friends? Would you be so kind as to share the recipe?

More often than not, we have pizza (courtesy of Domino's, 5-5-5 special), and everyone brings an assortment of chips and cookies. There is the occasional covered dish, or specially-prepared pre-game meal, but pizza-and-junkfood is our staple.

Every now and then, when I can find avocados on sale, I will mix up a batch of fresh guacamole and bring it along. It doesn't really "go with" pizza, but it sure goes fast...

Trav's Guacamole
-------------------------------------
4 large ripe avocadoes
2 roma tomatoes
1 medium onion
1 large lime
1/2 t. chili powder
1/2 t. cumin
1/2 t. garlic powder
1/2 t. Mexican oregano
1 T. dry cilantro (or 1 t. fresh, finely-chopped)
dash of Tabasco sauce
salt to taste

Peel, pit, and chop the avocadoes into a large glass bowl. Squeeze the lime over the avocadoes. Wash and dice the tomatoes, mince the onion, and add to avocadoes. Using a wire wisk as a pestile, pound the vegetables together until a coarse paste forms. Stir in the remaining ingredients, adding more or less chili powder to taste. Cover tightly and refrigerate until cold; serve with corn chips.

VARIATIONS:A shortcut to this recipe is to use a packet of taco seasoning mix instead of the chili powder, cumin, and oregano. Use more or less of it to taste.

Good food makes gaming better. Your guacamole recipe is pretty much identical to mine (except I don't use anything but a fork to mix it). My gaming group loves beef roasts and steaks of all kinds, so I make those whenever possible (and when I can tie it into an in-game meal, even better).

Brendan's Steak Marinade
1 cup red wine - This brings out the flavor of the meat (I suggest a cheap cabernet, like Charles Shaw).
1/4 cup soy sauce
1 sprig fresh rosemary, stripped and chopped (2 tablespoons if you're using dried)
2 cloves of garlic, chopped or minced (2 tablespoons of garlic powder if you're using that)

For wine, don't worry about using good wine, since it's cooking down. Salt and pepper your meat if you wish (I usually don't use salt, since the soy sauce has plenty), then place it in a Ziploc bag (or a vacuum-seal bag is even better) with the marinade, and let marinate in the fridge for a couple of hours at least (overnight is best).

Prepare by your desired method. The marinade can be reserved after marinating and cooked down for a red wine reduction sauce to top the meat. If you do intend to use it to make a sauce, then make sure the rosemary and the garlic are finely minced (putting the garlic through a press helps). Any kind of personal steak is great in this, as are tri-tip and London broil.

I put chips, cookies, and fresh fruit (though we are trying to have more fruit).

You forgot gummy candy, a vital food group. :D

But the thing we have the most you did not have...cheese and crackers.

We eat a fair amount of pasta when gaming on Thursday nights. Last night, I had made some fresh pesto (basil in season right now) so we had that with angel hair pasta. Otherwise, it tends to be pizza, subs, or chinese or thai take out.

For the Sunday night game, just about anything for food goes. We meet, bring the kids, and each session an adult has to take a turn at providing food for the whole group (though since there are 2 married couples, the cooking typically falls to the men even when it's the wives turns to cook). Food is usually something fairly easy to prepare for 5 adults and 4 kids but runs quite a spread from chili, pot roast, spaghetti, tacos, fried rice, or things prepared on the grill.

For my regular game, I give out bennies (either XP or extra action points) for bringing food. Every week, we have both junk (Little Debbie crap, candy, brownies, cookies, etc.) and a fruit/veggie tray. We get both healthy and unhealthy - it works out! Sadly, the player who brought beer moved away....
