• NOW LIVE! Into the Woods--new character species, eerie monsters, and haunting villains to populate the woodlands of your D&D games.

Name one thing you love and one thing you hate about 4e D&D

Love:
-Fixed hp
-That rolling for stats is the "variant" and not the default
-Faster character creation
-That 5 people is the default party size (been assuming this for years)
-Less Save-or-dies (I've been told some monsters still have them, so boo on that)
-Ability to retrain feats and powers every single level
-Choice of two stats for fort, ref, will, and AC. Just wish it didn't lead to odd problems (underpowered to have high str and con or be an intelligent and dexterous warrior)

Hate:
-The entire skill system
-Minion rules
-The fact that NPCs play by entirely different rules
-Healing Surges and potions
-"Missing" rules for things like disarming, tumbling, and tripping as an at will ability; hardness
-Unrealistic economy
-Calling level 1 characters "heroes"
-Extremely weakened status effects and special attacks, the most noticeable of which being the survivability of coup de grace.
-The multiclassing system
-The half-assed alignments
-Dearth of flavor text
-Lessening of unique abilities and talents between classes

Like
Classes and races are pretty well balanced
The concept of paragon paths

Dislike
Every character is essentially a spell-caster with all the baggage that comes with it. (I use x power. What does it do? Wait while I look it up.)
Lack of previously core races and classes in PHB
Monsters are too hard too kill resulting in excruciatingly long combats
Reduced customization
No real multiclassing

Love It
Point of Light - Three simple words that do a great job of defining a default setting.

Hate It
Focus on Gamist Elements - Seemingly arbitrary rules that are created to provide an in-game bonus that cannot be easily and consistently explained in-character.

Love: ritual magic. I thought it sounded like a stupid idea, but they did a good job with it (although some the costs seem a bit off).

Hate: Divine classes. Everything a cleric or paladin does is a miracle. The paladin never just hits somebody. I'm not thrilled the the 4e wizard's basic attack seems a lot like the wizard's basic attack from Hexen, but the the cleric, too?

Hey, no cheating - only one thing for each! Yes, Shazman, StreamOfTheSky, I am looking at you! ;)

I might come back later once I can make up my mind what I want to highlight... ;)

LOVE

The concepts and philosopy of 4E.

HATE

The application of the concepts and philosophy.

(Vague enough for you?;))

Love
I love the simplicity of setting up and running encounters. Adventure creation is absolutely fast. I get to spend my time now thinking about plot hooks and cool encounters.

Hate
That I don't get to play it more often.
