Are you buying a DDI subscription or not?

No.

I don't run 4e games, I rarely run standard dungeon crawls, and the DDI applications will not run under my OS of choice, without investing in expensive emulation software.

Probably not at this time.

If and when I feel I don't have the content I need and the news I read here and elsewhere suggests that DDI is of decent quality, then I'll consider it.

Well, getting a 42% confirmation rate among your prime target audience is a major win in any online marketing survey. If they convert even 15% of their target audience then the gang at WOTC will be dancing in the aisles.

A 42% "yes" is not cause for concern, it is champagne and cigars time.

And lest we forget, this is an EnWorld poll. :)

Yeah, I think WotC wouldn't be too disappointed with 42% of the 70,000+ EN World users subscribing.

However, I don't think it's champagne and cigars time, though - that would be for 90+%. ;)

I'm running a 4e game. The price for the magazine only subscription seems good, but I really can't afford it right now -- especially considering the additional expense of printing pages.

As for the rest of the DDI, well, it isn't here yet, so I can't make a decision.

Well, I've been considering the low-cost variant for the magazines. But since I don't play 4E yet (and probably won't for at least a year to come) it's just not worth it for me. I haven't read a single pdf article from beginning to end so far (well, except for one of the adventures which I adapted for my campaign). If these were print magazines, things might be different...

Anyway, I'll save the money (and time!) for now and become a DDI subscriber if or when I actually start playing 4E.

We interupt your posting for the following anouncement:

Is anyone else a little surprised that the majority of voters on this poll are not subscribing? . . .

Do keep in mind that other polls have shown a fairly even split on these boards between those playing 4e and those playing 3e, and those playing 3e will practically all vote not subscribing in this poll. Taking that into consideration, DDI is looking pretty.

I think 'most' of them won't be voting. Of course some will, and that certainly affects the results. I suspect the numbers for actuall 4e players are well represented by the fairly even split we saw in the 1st 24 hours of this poll.

Hmm. It would be interesting then to see a poll of 4e players only who are subscribing or not.

I'm not surprised, given that print Dragon and Dungeon had about a 2-3% pickup rate among D&D players (generously estimating a combined total of 50 000 subscribers and conservatively estimating 2 million D&D players world-wide*)

So to me, that so many are planning on subscribing, is indicative of a very high interest among the player base.

With the votes being this close, my gut feeling is that the things will change after a few months. ;)

For those who posted the above, please, do not turn this thread into a discussion about what the poll data might mean, or a discussion about the accuracy of ENWorld polls. For the sake of the thread, I will stipulate that ENWorld polls are not scientific and have no real intrinsic value. Another thing that has no intrinsic value is turning a thread about whether you are buying a DDI subscription and why, into a thread about 4E vs 3E, or a thread about who has the strongest statistics foo. Please adhere to the "No Edition Wars" guidelines. And, if you need to prove your statistics foo so badly, I suggest you go start a thread about statistics and have at it. Otherwise, please stick to the subject of the thread.

Also, please try to refrain from making assumptions that no one here is qualified to make, such as "those playing 3e will practically all vote not subscribing". Dungeon and Dragon, although based on the 4E system, have resources and articles that are useable in any edition, or even in non-D&D systems. Some of DDIs future applications are also non-system specific (i.e. Virtual Gametable). As I stated further up thread, I'm not playing 4E, but, I'm not buying a subscription because of the lack of requested features and format in Dungeon, not because it's 4E. I am living proof that the above quote is 100% incorrect, and there are others on this thread who have posted similiar sentiments. I have downloaded every single free download WoTC has had, even the free preview 4E Dungeon and Dragon. If they were "practically" useless for someone who only plays 3E, then I wouldn't have downloaded them.

However, due to the lack of features asked for in numerous threads and feedbacks (by me and many others), paying for a subscription isn't worth it to me until they do. If I ever hear, here on ENWorld or on the WoTC site, that Dungeon now has high res, full page artwork and keyed and unkeyed maps, I'd purchase a subscription on the spot. Until then, not a chance.

Thank you. You may now return to your regularly scheduled posting.;)

Nope.

1. No spare $$
2. No 4E game in the forseeable future
3. No print magazine

If any two of these change, then I'll consider it.

I'm currently working on converting Speaker in Dreams. A few things would make DDI worth it for me. The ability to scale monsters. Easy cut and paste so that I can move stuff into Word or other text editor. The Dragon and Dungeon magazines have been ok, but nothing I feel like I need. But useful DM tools would certainly do it for me. As it is now, not likely.
