Do you believe in Karma? Do you believe that what goes around, comes around?

(I know that this is primarily a Hinduism/Buddhism concept, but I would like to avoid derailing this thread. So post in this thread only if you agree to keep religious discussion out of it.)

I don't believe in it as a metaphysical law or something.

But I think it is right to a certain degree. If you input "negativity" in the system, this negative can turn against you. If you behave like a dick, someone will call you upon it. If you never help anyone one, nobody will help you ever out. (And some might even be compelled to actively work against you.)
Also, the other way around. Be friendly, people might remember your behavior. Maybe they follow up on it, and so it can go around. So I think friendliness is a good way to create a "positive feedback" loop. But I wouldn't trust on this to be a way to achieve riches, a great career or just find a great partner. But I think it makes life more enjoyable. ;)

Karma - explained "rationally" (yet optimistic) - is probably the closest I have to an actual belief.
Maybe it's a very fundamental thing: "Hey, wouldn't it be nice if we were nice to each other?"

The term "karma" is the closest I can come to describing that part of my belief system. I would describe myself as a secular karmic humanist. But, not to de-rail this thread over religious (or lack-there-of) debate and prattle.... I'll continue on now :p

The way I look at it is a sort of "top-down" view of our social interplay... people rubbing shoulders, stepping on one another's toes, helping pick up a pile of dropped items... everything you experience, it's one big system. And your actions are like stones and pebbles tossed into this maelstrom. If you try to keep positive, the influence you will have on people will be positive, and that will continue on along down the line. Likewise, if you are negative, and are a rude and un-courteous person, then you will pass that along.

In the end, I think it's far to complex to explain in mere words, at least at the stage humanity is at right now, but that's how I view things. I try to throw nice stones :p

Yes, and in much the way described above by others.

When you put good into the world, good will come back to you. Be nice to people, they will be nice back. Do a favor for a friend or coworker, they will help you out when you need it. Be positive, and positive things will come back to you. Of course it doesn't always work, but being negetive rarely brings good.

Agreed. Plus there are people in the world who are just so hateful that your good karma can't even off set them. Sucks when they are your in laws living next door.

Yes, I do believe in 'karma'.

I believe if you don't what is coming to you in real life or make a change, then 'karma' will see to it that you get what is coming to you in the afterlife.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Uhm... I hope this comment doesn't come out as "religion-sided" but... my idea is that "karma" really has little to do with an "afterlife". Sounds more like a balance in the world as a whole. The cultural traditions it came from are, in a way, very realist.

Hey, that is your opinion and I can respect it. I'm not calling you our for your beliefs. ;)
