It varies per character of course, but currenty it's duty. She is a sergeant in the army and lost her squad in the tunnels and interplanar portals beneath Raven's Bluff and is now trying to get them back...

Well DMing right now so no character. The character in my head however, well he (she in disguise) is trying to avoid her unknown fate. I guess it could count as "Survival", in that she is afraid of what is to come/the changes it will bring. Which follows lots of the themes of Survival.

I would say for past characters Survival and Uncovering are the two most common (sometimes intersecting) motivations. Survival usually means being on the run, and Uncovering is either why they are threatened, or find something out about their past.

There was one character where Money brought up Survival/Uncovery. Since she was greedy and stole a skull of Lothar's. Now she is on the run, and also trying to figure out what is so special about this skull.

I've played quite a few, although the most common in our group might just be "We like to kill things". Sometimes you're a duty bound paladin who wants to rid the world of evil, sometimes it's just for the money, and sometimes, it's just because you want to stick a sword through something and watch it die.

For my current character, it is actually research -- but then again I am a Bonisagus magus ;)

Ah, the wonders of different systems :D

Generally my characters' motivations relate to poking things with sticks. I'll never pass up a big red button labeled "Do Not Push".
