Well considering that they already agreed to end it after 2 more seasons (the season starting in a week and the season after that) I thought it was odd to say it's been cancelled. So I figured some twist was up, especailly when you used the words "sort of" in the OP

Or probably just a producers' joke taking a stab at ABC for canceling a handful of good shows like Pushing Daisies and Eli Stone.

Not excusing ABC of anything, since I loved PD, but...

1) Rome was by HBO, not ABC. Very different companies.

2) Rome was extremely expensive to produce. It was basically $8 million an episode, for 12 episodes ($100m initial investment). If your financial burden is that high, you need a lot higher numbers than Rome could have ever pulled in to stay on the air. The economics just didn't work out.
