Composed of three separate islands, Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira, the entire construction will add nearly 330 miles of beach front to the city of Dubai. Parts of Palm Jumeirah are currently open for development, with the remaining islands to be completed in the next 10-15 years. When finished, the three islands will contain over 100 luxury hotels while Palm Deira itself will be almost as large as Paris.

Turucambi :
"...The region is some 30 miles across, roughly oval, and has numerous small islands which consists almost entirely of steep ridges...It has been suggested that Turucambi might be artificial in whole or in part. Such convoluted islands are found nowhere else in such numbers..."

I watched a documentary about the building of The World at Dubai some time ago. It discussed all of the difficulties involved in building artificial islands on such a grand scale.

On Discover or the Learning Channel. I saw it also. All kidding aside it is amazing but yeah- major hubris and I'm just waiting for it to flood by storm, quake or ice melt.

I was in Dubai 3 weeks ago and went for a drive out to Palm Jumeirah. It's lavish, but you can't really appreciate the engineering unless you're at the top of one of the mega-expensive flats and hotels.

But that's the point. Conspicuous consumption is all the rage in the UAE.

I did, however, see Santa Claus walking down the main road. That was cool.
