The World's Largest Man-Made Island

On Discover or the Learning Channel. I saw it also. All kidding aside it is amazing but yeah- major hubris and I'm just waiting for it to flood by storm, quake or ice melt.
Not to mention the local species that will be killed by destroying or filling those ecosystems.

And yes, conspicuous consumption really is all the rage. I believe I read somewhere that there's a prince in UAE that sleeps in a real Ferrari that he had made into a bed.

You actually want innocent blood shed just to see a wealthy person take a blow to their finances? I'm sorry Relique, but I'm guessing that I don't know you very well as a person. What if someone you cared about was vacationing there when the attack happened?

I said that because the only way terrorism can truly end in the middle east is if every middle eastern government takes a stand against terrorism and actively condemns it. Unfortunately that will not happen unless an affluent middle eastern nation becomes the target of a extremist terrorist group and has a nice shinny new building with thousands of people within it laid to waste.. It's sad, messed up, but its true.

By the way, Rev, my parents, little brother Victor, and niece Jessica went to Israel back in 2001 as part of a pilgrimage (the pilgrimage lasted from June to late August 2001). There was a terrorist attack near one of the hotels they were staying at. If they would have died on that trip, I sure in hell would have enlisted after 911 just to get the chance to get at some terrorists (because at that point it wouldn't matter what organization they were with since my family and country would have suffered at terrorist hands).

So.. if someone I knew was in Dubai and visited one of those shinny new buildings and died in a terrorist attack, you can bet that I would want the country who supported that terrorist organization to be carpet bombed out of existance or the members of that terrorist group and their backers to be round up and executed. I would also hope that Dubai or some other Muslim nation would come out and say say 'It's time to end the terrorism once and for all!'

Thing is, that in my mind, every life is precious. Everybody, regardless of their past actions, should have a chance to redeem themselves. I have more of a hatred form my own country for not dealing with the issues in it and istead focuses on fixing the problems outside of it.

How many US citizens have to die because the government won't channel funding into more homeless shelters, healthcare and try to help those that can't help themselves.

It's not just the US, Rev, it's the entire world. Many government funded "free" services tend to be abysmal in quality no matter what nation you are in (since the priority of things tend to fall in a descending order of profitability). As a result some ultra rich development firm built that island in Dubai and not hundreds of homeless shelters. For the same reason a mega tower that is going to become one of the tallest in the world was built instead of those millions being used to give high quality free education to Dubai's children or to develop cheap and superior energy alternatives to oil.

Oh my god. I weep for the future. :.-(
